Remarks:
During construction work on Route 2, twenty-seven men were sworn in as Special Police Officers to handle the heavy traffic and the road was kept open to traffic during the entire period of construction. These officers with little or no pre- vious experience, did an excellent job and kept traffic moving so steadily that many truck drivers and operators of pleasure cars who use this Route daily, refused to use the detour over Route 111 as they said that they could make better time over the road that was under construction, so efficient was the work of these men. The officers were paid through the contractor at the rate of seventy-five cents per hour and worked a forty hour week and the sum of $6,629.25 was received in wages. Many of these officers had to be appointed on short notice and the cooperation of the Selectmen in this matter was greatly appreciated.
-67-
Pistol Range:
A pistol range is under construction in the Town Hall cellar and while not completed has been used for several months. The officers are being instructed by Raymond Hatch of Main Street who is rated with the best pistol shots in the State. His generous offer to instruct the police officers was gratefully received.
Recommendations for Highway Safety:
I would recommend that more white center lines be paint- ed on our streets at dangerous curves, as these lines not only help to prevent accidents but are very essential in placing the blame on the person involved in an accident who fails to keep to the right of the road.
In closing, I take this opportunity to thank all those who co-operated with me in carrying out the duties of this office during the past year.
Respectfully submitted,
MICHAEL FOLEY, Chief of Police.
