-45-

Last year you appropriated a sum of $125.00 for suppressing the gypsy moth which looked at that time sufficient to pay all expenses. In March and April we found several more places infested, and with cost of putting on burlaps and turning them about three months for the purpose of killing the gypsy cater- pillars-hundreds were destroyed in this trap, caught under the burlap. Oct 1, 1907, the state gypsy moth superintendent gave orders for the town of Carver to be thoroughly scouted for egg clusters in all orchards, road-sides, woods, roads leading from Main street throughout the town.

Feb. 1, 1908, we have scouted about two-thirds of town and find we have plenty of gypsy moth colonies scattered through- out the entire town ; the worst infested places are in North Car- ver, where they first appeared, showing you how rapidly they increase. At present time we have about 19 woods colonies, an estimate of about 15 acres to be cleared from all brush, trees to trim and thinned out and all brush to be burned before April 1, 1908. Thousands of trees will have to be burlapped this year or sprayed.

I will state that all work is under the direction of state sup- erintendent of gypsy moth work, No. 6 Beacon street, Boston.

For benefit of taxpayers will say that the town is reimbursed all over one-half of one per cent. of our valuation. At present time our liability is about $550.00. We make an estimate that it will cost the state this year $1000 in Carver.

Yours respectfully,

E. H. MURDOCK, Tree Warden.

REPORT OF PARK COMMISSIONERS.

To the Citizens of Carver-

By the following account you will see that we have a balance of $43.01. We invite you to carefully examine this account.

-46-

By so doing you will see that we have been very fortunate in our expense bills.

We expected to be obliged to take the land through the courts and knowing the assistance of Mr. M. H. Cushing of Middleboro would be of great value on account of his long acquaintance with matters of the Dr. Shurtleff estate, we solicited his aid.

When we asked for his bill he replied that he always felt a great interest in Carver and especially the Old Home Day move- ment and that he had no bill. As Mr. Cushing went to a great deal of expense in traveling and gave so freely of his time, this proved to be quite an item.

Mr. S. C. C. Finney, who was engaged to close the deal with Mr. Cushing, also had no bill. You only need to glance at the bill of Mr, Stetson for counsel fee and Mr. Cornish for survey- ing. drawing of park plans and writing deed, to see that they were very moderate in their charges. We should feel very grateful to these gentlemen for their consideration.

There is very little trimming left to be done, but a large amount of clearing and cleaning up to be done early this spring, and as we do not wish to overdraw our balanee we would ask you to raise and appropriate the sum of fifty dollars for our use.

We wish to thank you for your liberal appropriation in the past for park purposes.
