Report of the School Committee

Fellow Citizens:

Our schools have been rather expensive for the past year; this was caused by the advance in prices of almost everything. Arithmetic paper which used to cost 20c per package of 500 sheets now costs 45c per package; white composition paper that used to cost 25c is now 50c.

The cost of fuel has increased enormously as well as books and general school supplies. There is also quite an advance in teachers' salaries.

There are many requirements of the State with which the local committee has to comply.

However, there is a brighter side to this picture. If you will study the Town Report you will find many thousand dollars re- imbursed to the Town from the State for money spent for our schools.

The Town has to raise or appropriate sufficient money to cover all school expenses, then a large portion of this money is reimbursed to the Town from the State or from the Federal Gov- ernment.

The past year the Town received for the first time $3542.50 from the State for School Transportation.

The money spent for the Agricultural Department is wholly reimbursed but the Town first has to appropriate a sufficient sum to cover all expenses for the year.

The Household Arts Department is also largely reimbursed.

We have about 90 pupils in our high school and 67 in the grades. The cost of educating them is less per pupil than it has been for a number of years. The State Department has allowed the Committee to revise the tuition rates which should give us additional reimbursement in tuition after January 1, 1948.

The number of pupils in the elementary grades has increased so much that the two teachers cannot give them the individual attention that they should have and several of the parents have

97

asked that more help be given their children; also the number of pupils exceeds the amount of space that the State requires for each pupil and for those reasons the Committee made arrange- ments to have the two younger grades use the south part of the dining room in the Town Hall for temporary quarters and Mrs. Jean MacKimmie was engaged to teach grades three, four and five in the primary room.

Six of our teachers attended summer school last year.

Respectfully submitted,

WILLIAM BULLARD J. ALLAN BIXBY FLORA H. CROWL

(The net cost is approximately 39% of the total cost) (The net cost in percent was 39% in 1946)

This is not the actual net cost because the New Salem Acad- emy Trustees will reimburse the Town for the cost of the Agri- cultural Department. Also there is $1631.18 due the Town, which has not been received. This will make a net cost of ap- proximately $10,500.00 for the year 1947.
