SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.

TO THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE OF MENDON :

It is unfortunate that the school reports of the district are due this year at a time when a change of superintendents is taking place. Not that school reports are very important, but they are customary.

The town is fortunate to have all its schools in session, for there are hundreds of schools in our country which have been obliged to close entirely or accept a teacher of much lower grade of preparation than usual, and especially in towns where salaries are as low as they have been in Mendon. It is very gratifying to me at this time to know that salaries in Mendon have been equalized so that they are much nearer the stand- ard than formerly.

I shall repress whatever inclination I may have to write a farewell report or a resume of my term of service There is however one fact I wish to mention. It is refreshing to find a town whose teachers yet have the old-fashioned New England conscience ; who would be just as devoted to the work whether their salary was twelve dollars per week or twenty-five ; who feel the sacredness of that old expression, "A charge to keep, I have"; who are still proud of the fact that they belong to a profession and are not tainted by a desire to strike or join a union of the Soviet.

Respectfully submitted,

F. G. ATWELL.
