The summer pre-school round-up was held June 5, by Doctors Goff and Nickerson. 33 children were exam- ined and 28 were vaccinated showing an improvement in numbers over 1932.

During the year the children have been weighed and measured at intervals checking up underweights. Those needing milk were supplied by the Harwich Visiting Nurse Association. 1440 bottles given free. We found this helped them greatly.

The children's Summer Camp at Pocasset accommo- dated eight of our school children who were very much in need of special care. Those who needed tonsils and ade- noids removed and dental care received it free. Each child gained several pounds in weight which gave them a good start for the school year.

There were 408 school room visits made and 391 home visits. Three children were fitted with eye glasses.

22

We wish to thank the Community Xmas Tree Fund, Red Cross, Kiwanis and Woman's Club for furnishing funds to supply clothing and foot wear to those who really need it.

Harwich is very proud of the fact that our Nurse, Hope Becker, was awarded the Harkness Scholarship which is given to a nurse in a rural community; who has not graduated from a Public Health Training Course, and one who does bedside nursing as well as school nursing. Miss Becker was the only one in the State to receive this Honor which entitles her to a four month's course at Columbia University with all expenses paid.

Since I was appointed school nurse in 1922 I find the work has been trippled, but I also find a great im- provement in the children. There are fewer underweights, and personal care improved.

I wish to thank the parents and teachers for their cooperation.

Respectfully submitted,

MARIA P. BEARSE, R. N. Substitute Nurse

REPORT OF SUPERVISOR OF ATTENDANCE

To the Superintendent of Schools:

At the commencement of schools we took the census of all children between the ages of five and sixteen years.

The year 1933 there have been no cases of reported truancy. I have investigated a number of cases reported absent, and I found that these children were either ill or not having proper clothing, all of which have been re- ported and the conditions remedied.

I wish to thank the School Committee, Superinten- dent, all the teachers and parents for their cooperation in this work.

Respectfully,

JOHN T. WOOD

Supervisor of Attendance
