ARTHUR C. PECKHAM, Town Accountant.

Report of Moth Work.

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen: Gentlemen :

I submit the annual report of the Moth Superintendent for the year ending December 31, 1923.

Through careful creosoting the gypsy moth egg clusters and spraying, we have been successful in prevent- ing the stripping of the leaves off the trees on the highways in the town, although there are a lot of moths back in the woods. The Brown-tail moth has been nearly exterminated and we hope by watching carefully to be able to prevent their return. For financial statement see report of the town accountant.

Report of Sealer of Weights and Measures.

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen :

Gentlemen :

I herewith submit my report as Sealer of Weights and Measures for the year ending December 31, 1923.

I find the scales, weights and measures in the town in fair condition.

The law demands that all weighing and measuring devices be tested and sealed once a year. I would recom- mend that all dealers watch their scales and measures care- fully and if they have any doubt as to their accuracy, that they call the sealer and have them tested. If they have been sealed once during the year there is no charge for testing. If they have to be adjusted there is a small charge for that.

The following scales, weights and measures have been tested and sealed during the year :

Report of Tree Warden.

To the Honorable Board of Selectmen and Citizens of West Bridgewater:

Herewith find report of Tree Warden.

There has been a lot of dead limbs taken out of the trees of the town that were dangerous. There are a lot more that should be taken out. I have cut down six trees that were dead and dangerous. I have cut bushes on Bed- ford St., Keenan St., Progressive Ave., Spring St. and Brooks Place. It is now necessary to trim trees higher owing to the large loads that are carried on trucks. I would especially call your attention to the damage done to our small trees by careless autoists and mischievous boys. I would suggest that a reward be offered for evidence that will lead to a conviction for maliciously damaging trees be- longing to the town. For financial statement of this depart- ment see report of the town accountant.

Respectfully submitted,

CHRISTOPHER READ,

Tree Warden.

Report of Work done in West Bridgewater under the Plymouth County Extension Service.

All those interested in receiving help from the Plym- outh County Extension Service have had a profitable year. The Women's Clothing Construction Group completed the first course in June, and is represented in the advanced class this winter. The aim of the Extension Service is to pass on to others the help received, so once started, even a few can reach many. The Kitchen Improvement Group report progress in work begun last year. Several have added time saving equipment in their kitchens. A four day school for canning for sale was held last summer in Boston with Prof. Cole of the Extension Service in charge. It was attended by leaders who brought the work back to West Bridgewater.

The interest in fruit growing was proved by the well attended pruning demonstration in this town. Trips were taken to larger orchards in Bridgewater and Lakeville. Pruning, spraying, cover crops and marketing were points emphasized.

The poultrymen of the town are represented in the Plymouth County Poultry Association which has quarterly meetings in Halifax. The hen thief problem is only one of many handled by the Association.

Most encouraging progress was made in Junior Club work. Poultry, Canning, Bread, and Garden Clubs were formed in Cochesett. They worked through the summer to

such good effect that prizes were won at both Bridgewater and Brockton Fairs. A local exhibit proved to the parents in the community that the children had raised good vege- tables, grown fine birds, canned wholesome fruit and vege- tables and made good bread. The Poultry Club is still car- rying on, keeping daily egg records and profiting by the ad- vice of Mr. Freeman, the Junior Extension Leader. A Gar- ment Club, organized this fall, is thriving with Miss S. B. Codding as Local Leader. The enjoyment of the boys and girls at their club meetings furnishes wholesome interest in their daily home tasks.

Records show that sixty families have received direct help. Indirectly the whole town has profited by this serv- ice to the county.

Last year $100 was appropriated for this work,-a similar amount is asked for this year.
