REPORT

OF

WATER COMMISSIONERS.

The Water Commissioners herewith submit their Annual Report for the year ending Dec. 31, 1898.

During the year the pipe systems have been extended as required. The Broadway pipe, laid in 1897, has been placed in service from Massachusetts avenue to Tufts street, but the remainder of the pipe cannot be used until the street is graded.

The poor quality of the low-service water last season was due to the compulsory use of the brook necessary to keep up the supply. Frequent rains kept the brook roily and this water had to be mixed with the filtered water because the latter was not sufficient in quantity. The increased de- mand for water has made it necessary to use the brook much more this year than formerly.

Dead ends have been abolished on 'the high service at Ashland, Elmore, Tanager, Appleton, and Vine streets and at Oakland, Bartlett, and Wachusett avenues; on the low service at Wyman and Palmer streets. This has very much reduced the complaints due to poor quality of the water.

The town was admitted to the Metropolitan Water Dis- trict on Jan. 31, 1899.

The various details will be given below under the differ- ent headings.

REPORT OF WATER COMMISSIONERS.

Total of both services : 31.51 miles of pipe, 309 hydrants, and 236 gates. The pipe laid in Broadway and not used is not included, that replaced has been deducted.

In addition to the above there are 3,436 feet of smaller pipe, 2 in. to 14 in., which is laid in places where hydrants were not needed and the amount of water desired was small.

The details of the cost of the pipe extensions will be found in the Report of the Superintendent. Records and sketches showing the location of the pipes and connections have been made and arranged in convenient form for use and reference.

Quantity and Quality of Water.

The high-service supply was taken from 23 wells from January 1 to March 1, from 20 wells till April 21, from 23 wells till June 26, from 25 wells till July 1, and from 27 wells for the remainder of the year. The three new wells driven this year have been in constant use.

Analyses of the high-service water from 1897 to the pres- ent are given in Table I. The turbidity of the water appears to be increasing, as well as the iron.

The analyses of the low-service water from 1897 to now, given in Table II., show no marked change. The roily con- dition of the water has previously been accounted for. The use of water for flushing sewers, coupled with the more, effi- cient and consequently slower filtration due to the new gravel coating on the filter, have together caused the brook to be used for a considerable period in excess of that of last year.

The following table gives dates and times when water for the low-service supply was taken from the various sources :
