LEAKS IN SERVICE PIPES.

A number of leaky services have been repaired and cleaned out ; in very old services we find that the leak is nearly always at the stop-cock on the sidewalk; in most cases the iron pipes have rusted and broken off from the brass stop-cock. This is al- most exclusively confined to the old or low-service.

On the high service the leaks are almost always confined to the goose-neck at the main pipe, and I am inclined to think that the pulsations of the pump cause the greater part of the leaks. A pipe should be laid from the pump direct to the stand-pipe.

REPORT OF SUPERINTENDENT OF WATER WORKS. 253

METERS.

There are now 71 meters in use ; 6 have been added during the year and 1 discontinued.

THE RESERVOIR AND STAND-PIPE LOT

Have received the usual care ; the walks around the stand-pipe have been hoed and raked.

The rip-rap around the reservoir has been cleaned, the banks mowed, and the weeds raked in heaps and burned. The reservoir lot is in fairly good condition.

PIPE YARD.

Early in the year it was found desirable to provide a place for storing pipe, as the yard at the shop is of limited capacity. A piece of ground belonging to the B. & M. R. R. was leased for a term of years, and a derrick erected. As the track is laid alongside the yard the cars containing the pipe are backed under the derrick and unloaded, quickly and easily ; this is found to be a great improvement over the old system of rolling the pipes from the cars by hand.

SHOP.

The shop, tools, horses, and wagons are in good condition.

Respectfully submitted,

THOMAS RODEN.
