Report of the Trustees of the Free Public Library.
The Library now contains more than twenty-five hundred vol- umes, embracing nearly every department of literature. Among those recently added are: Wey's "Rome," Dore's "Dante," (folio ed.) Boswell's "Johnson." Wells' "Life of Samuel Adams," Chief Justice Taney's "Memoirs" and Ticknor's "Spanish Literature." Several finely illustrated works have been added to the reference department.
The new Index volumes to Harper's Magazine and the Cen- tury may be used with profit. The Government "Bulletins," con- taining brief accounts of the South American countries will be found interesting and valuable.
The Trustees gratefully acknowledge the additional gift by Pay Director Edward F. May, U. S. N., of forty volumes of "War Records," accompanied by the valuable series of maps. Other works of interest have been presented by Miss Elizabeth Ward of Shrewsbury, Hon. J. H. Walker, Prof. Wm. HI, Hobbs and Mr. Frank R. Batchelder.
Auburn was originally named Ward, in honor of Gen. Artemas Ward, Commander-in Chief of the Provincial forces in the Rev- olution.
It will be noted with interest that a large, handsome photo- graph by Lawrence of Peale's portrait of Gen. Ward has been placed by the trustees in the Library.

AUDITOR'S REPORT.
I have examined the accounts of the several Town officers en- trusted with the receipt, custody, or expenditure of money, and find them (to the best of my knowledge and belief) correctly kept, and with proper vouchers for each item of expense.
