School Committee of Eastham.
SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT.
To the School Committee of Eastham:
MRS. MOORE AND GENTLEMEN : I have the honor to submit my fifth annual report. In my first report I entered a plea for consolidation of the schools; the town gave us consolidation, and after several years under that system I find myself constrained to plead for its continuance.
I have listened in vain to hear any complaints about the work that is being done in the schools. All seem to agree that progress is surer, swifter and more substantial than in the mixed schools; that the work is more thorough, and that a better foundation is laid for the future. Yet each year there has been a murmur of dissatisfaction that has threatened to sweep this system back upon the rocks where too many schools are already lying wrecked and useless. And the storm centre of this dissatisfaction has hung about the North Eastham barge route, almost wholly. Surely, when the preservation of so worthy an end as the consolida- tion of the schools is in question, an agreement as to barge routes, entirely satisfactory to reasonable people, ought to be possible. And I understand the committee have pro- posed to run two barges from the North, over different roads, which ought to remove any cause of complaint. -
