The record of Intentions of Marriage shows the true number of Newton people who are married; the law requiring a certificate from the City or Town Clerk where each party resides.
MARRIAGES.
The whole number of Marriages recorded in Newton for 1867, was 100 couples ; 35 couples more than during 1866.

Some from other places come into Newton to be married, but more go out -all the Catholics.
The greatest number of marriages in any one month was 15, in December; and the least number was 2, in March.

We are glad to see evidence in the above, that the young people of Newton are beginning to conclude that it is not necessary for them to wait until they can commence where their parents leave off.
DEATHS.
The whole number of deaths, in Newton, in 1867 was 133, which is 17 more than in 1866; 6 more than in 1865; and 2 less than in 1864. Males, 67 ; Females, 66.
The oldest person who died in Newton, during the year, was Daniel Moriarty, who was 87 years of age.

By the above return, the proportion of deaths to the population has been 1 in about 70. Consumption still leads as a disease among us, and its proportion of the deaths for the last ten years has been as follows; viz .: in 1858 and 1859, one fourth of all the deaths; in 1860, one sixth; in 1861, one seventh; in 1862, one in seven and three fourths ; in 1863, one in six and one half; in 1864, one in five and one half; in 1865, one in six and two thirds; in 1866, one in five and one half; and in 1867, one in about six. It becomes us all, but especially our young ladies, to inquire whether something more cannot be done as a preventive against this great disease of New England, which is ten times more to be dreaded than the cholera. We still recommend keeping the feet dry and warm, (though the tyrant, Fashion, may again introduce thin-soled shoes) ; also, to cover the head, when exposed to the weather, more than now is done (although Fashion may take away what little remains of our ladies' bonnets).
By reference to the above table, it will be seen that one third of all our deaths are of persons under 10 years of age. What can mothers do to carry safely through the straits of infancy and early childhood, more of the little ones intrusted mainly to their care ?
POPULATION AND MORTALITY IN NEWTON FOR EIGHT YEARS PAST.
The following Table is very nearly correct, and will be interesting to the inhabitants of Newton : -

The above table may be relied upon as being very nearly correct ; and although about one third of our deaths are of children under 10 years of age, and about one sixth by consumption, yet it speaks well for our Town. It appears that, for the last eight years, the average of deaths has been one in about seventy-four of our population ; while the average mortality of our State has been about one in fifty-four.
MARSHALL S. RICE, Registrar.
Newton Centre, Feb. 7, 1868.
NEWTON CEMETERY.
THIS Cemetery, including the additions recently made to it, contains an area of about 65 acres, located about in the territorial centre of the town, extending from Homer Street to Beacon Street, with a front on Homer Street of about 1,000 feet, and on Beacon Street of about 500 feet.
Three hundred and ninety-four persons have selected lots in this Cemetery; and most of them have been graded, otherwise prepared, and used.
During the past year, six lots have been inclosed with granite, and a number of monuments and monumental tablets have been erected ; among them is numbered the beautiful marble Monument erected by the children of the public schools of the Town, in grateful remem- brance of that noble man, Dr. Henry Bigelow, so much beloved, and so long President of our Cemetery Corporation.
There are now twenty lots graded and ready for sale, and about as many more partly graded.
Lots located on our avenues, of the common size, and well graded, with four stone posts, 'can be had for about $100.00 ; lots similarly pre- pared, located on the paths, about $85.00; and smaller lots for a less · price.
All the moneys received for lots are expended upon the grounds, in grading lots, avenues, paths, and for ornamental purposes. When the snow is gone, we invite the citizens of Newton who have not selected a spot where the family group may be finally gathered, to visit our Cemetery for that purpose.
