SELECTMEN'S REPORT.
The Selectmen present, herewith, their report of the disbursements in the several departments during the last year.
A careful consideration of the details will give a comprehensive idea of the manner the money appropriated has been spent.
The expenses have been kept within the appropriations.
In the Almshouse account, the increased amount of produce sold, and the large amount of work done by the keeper, outside of the Almshouse, has decreased the net cost of the poor at the Almshouse considerably.
The widening and straightening of Summer Avenue is not quite finished and we have asked for an extension of time in which to finish the work. We think after receiving the award from the County, the Avenue will be completed within the amount appropri- ated.
In our report of last year, we referred to the bridge over the Railroad at Mineral Street as having been open for travel. This bridge needs to have the approaches graded to make it safe and com- fortable and we shall ask for a small appropriation for that purpose.
Owing to the construction of a reservoir at the Engine House, the ground was left in such a loose condition, that it was not considered advisable to concrete over it. We would recommend that the bal- ance of the appropriation, for a concrete sidewalk at that place, be carried over to next year.
The following list of appropriations we presented for your consid- eration :-

The accounts of the Selectmen, Treasurer, and Collector have been examined and found correct. The balance of cash on hand, $4,833 .- 51, as stated by your Treasurer, is correct.
The first note of the town coming due, is for $6,000 payable, July 27th, 1887. The appropriation at the last Annual Meeting for the reduction of the town debt, was one dollar per thousand of the valu- ation of the town, amounting to $2,370.00. From this $815.00 of debt has been paid, leaving a balance unexpended of $1,555.00 ap- plicable to this purpose as soon as it can be used. With an appro- priaton this year and next of the same amount each year as that of last year, the town will be prepared to pay the note coming due in 1887. This note bears 5 per cent. interest. All the other notes are at 4 per cent.
