$844 36 We herewith submit for your consideration the following list of appropriations which we deem necessary for the proper care and maintenance of streets and walks for the ensuing year :- Highways and bridges
Removing snow 350 00
Concrete sidewalks and edgestone, provided abut- ters pay one half . .
500 00
Concrete gutters and cross walks 300 00
For rebuilding westerly abutment of Mineral St.
bridge which is now in an unsafe condition 200 00
$3500 00
37
For guide-posts $ 25 00 300 00
Incidental expenses .
On account of the open winter by which the roads have been washed and worn to an unusual extent, and knowing that a large outlay must be made during the year for repairs on bridges, we think it advisable to ask an increased appropriation that our streets may be kept in a good state of repairs.
We would call attention to some of the improvements that have been made during the past year ; noticeably at the corner of Sanborn and Woburn Streets, where previously every hard rain caused an expensive washout across Woburn Street, which is now entirely avoided. The improved walks on High and Lowell Streets, the widening of Lowell Street, draining of Green Street, straightening and regrading Highland Street are all permanent benefits to the town. There are many other places where changes are as much needed, but with the limited amount of money, compared with the many miles of roads, it has been impossible to make all the changes and improvements which seemed desirable.
Respectfully submitted,
CHARLES A. WESTON, 1 Road Commissioners HENRY S. LACLAIR, of Reading.
S. W. BOWKER.

We have examined the accounts of the Tax Collectors, and find $44,720.38 has been received for taxes and interest, of which $43,079.06 has been paid to the Town Treasurer, and $1,641.32 to the County Treasurer.
The accounts of the Selectmen and Treasurer we have also examined, and find satisfactory vouchers for all disbursements.
The balance of cash in hand, as stated by the Treasurer, $3,196.58 is correct.
Of the outstanding notes $28,000.00 bears interest at 4 per cent. and the balance $3,000.00 bears interest at 32 per cent. Only one note matures the coming year namely, $1,000.00, March 1, 1890.

REPORT OF THE BOARD OF ENGINEERS.
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen, of the Town of Reading :
The Engineers of the Fire Department most respectfully submit their thirty-fifth annual report.
The department has responded to six alarms since our last report :
1888. May 8. House of Hubbard E. Cox. Loss, none. Insurance, none.
Aug. 29. Stable used by Henry Plummer. Loss, $400. Insurance, none.
Sept. 21. Barn of J. Stokes. Loss, $100. Insurance, $200. Insurance received, $100.
Dec. 16. Grass near old Rubber Works. Loss, $10. Insured.
1889. Jan. 10. House of Asa Parker. Loss, $600. Insur- ance, none.
Mar. 13. Grass on land of Emery Bancroft. Loss, none.
The Board thinks that the citizens have reason to be thank- ful for the small loss by fire during the past year.
The department is in excellent condition. There has been a large addition to the fire alarm system the past year, and the addition has been of great value to the outlying districts of the town. The system should be extended as rapidly as the facilities for obtaining a water supply for use in case of fire is increased. At present several sections of the town are either entirely without a water supply, or are so inadequately pro- vided for, that the department could do but little good in case
