TOWN WARRANT.
COMMONWEALTH OF MASSACHUSETTS.
MIDDLESEX, SS.
TO EITHER OF THE CONSTABLES OF THE TOWN OF READING,
Greeting :
In the name of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, you are hereby required to notify and warn the inhab- itants of the town of Reading, qualified to vote in elections and town affairs, to meet in Lyceum Hall in said Reading, on Monday, the first day of April, A.D. 1889, at seven o'clock in the forenoon, to act on the following articles, viz:
ARTICLE 1. To choose a Moderator to preside at said meeting.
ART. 2. To hear and act on the reports of the Selectmen, Assessors, Overseers of the Poor, Treasurer, Collectors, School Committee, Engineers of the Fire Department, Trustees of the Public Library, Trustees of the Cemetery and Auditors.
ART. 3. To bring in their votes on one ballot for Town Clerk, Selectmen, Assessors, Overseers of the Poor, Treasurer, Collector of Taxes, Constables, one Road Commissioner for three years, also on separate ballot, two members of the

School Committee for three years ; also on separate ballots to bring in their votes in answer to the question " shall licenses be granted for the sale of intoxicating liquors in this town ;" each ballot to be received at the same time in separate boxes.
ART. 4. To choose all other necessary Town Officers.
ART. 5. To see if the Town will accept the provisions of Chapter 225 of the Statutes of 1878 in relation to the election of a Board of Selectmen, Assessors and Overseers of the Poor, to take effect at the Annual Town Meeting in 1890.
ART. 6. To determine how much money the Town will raise for schools, incidental school expenses, repairs of highways and bridges, removing snow and ice, fire department, support of the poor, street lights, salaries of town officers, state and mili- tary aid, printing, abatement of taxes, town office, maintenance of the police, cemetery, public library, soldiers' graves, inter- est on the town debt, reduction of the town debt, and miscel- lancous expenses.
ART. 7. To see if the Town will authorize their Treasurer, under the direction of the Selectmen, to hire money in antici- pation of taxes.
ART. 8. To see if the Town will employ night watchmen the ensuing year, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 9. To see what sum of money the town will raise and appropriate for the purpose of laying concrete sidewalks and edgestones the ensuing year, provided the abuttors pay one half the expenses of laying the same, or what they will do in rela- tion thereto.
ART. 10. To see what instructions the Town will give their Assessors, Selectmen, Collector and Auditors.
ART. 11. To determine the compensation of the Collector.
ART. 12. To see how much money the Town will raise and appropriate for the enforcement of the liquor law or what they will do in relation thereto.

ART. 13. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate the sum of fifty dollars for the care of the Town clock, on the Old South M. E. Church for the ensuing year.
ART. 14. To see how much money the Town will raise and appropriate for the improvement of the Common, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 15. To see if the Town' will extend Haven street through to Parker street, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 16. To see how much money the Town will raise and appropriate for the repair of Green street at the intersection of Village street, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 17. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars to build a sidewalk on the north side of Prescott street, commencing at the corner of the property owned by Mrs. M. B. Garfield and continuing to Sum- mer avenue, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 18. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate a sufficient sum of money to lay a cross-walk over Arlington and Washington streets at their junction with Prescott street.
ART. 19. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate a sufficient sum of money to lay a cross-walk over Linden street at its intersection with Woburn street, and also one over Wo- burn street at its junction with Linden street.
ART. 20. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate one hundred and twenty-five dollars to concrete the gutters on each side of Woburn street, commencing at the corner of Temple street and extending to the brook on the northerly side and abutting the estate of Mrs. Clinton B. Holden on the southerly side to said brook.
ART. 21. To see if the Town will authorize its officers to lay a sidewalk on the south side of Woburn street from West street to the residence of Needham Nichols.

ART. 22. To see how much money the Town will raise and appropriate to widen Charles street and construct a sidewalk between Pearl and Wakefield streets in said Reading, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 23. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate the sum of fifty dollars to straighten and repair Pearl street, be- tween Charles and Salem streets.
ART. 24. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate the sum of one hundred dollars, to repair the concrete sidewalk on Salem street.
ART. 25. To see if the Town will instruct the Selectmen to appoint a Town Forester, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 26. To see if the Town will erect a fire alarm box at or near the residence of J. B. Nichols, and that the sum of one hundred and fifty dollars be raised therefor.
ART. 27. To see if the Town will erect and maintain a street light on Sanborn street, in the lower and shaded portion thereof, between Woburn and Haven streets.
ART. 28. To see if the Town will appropriate the sum of four hundred dollars from its Treasury to pay the outstanding debt of the Fire Department, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 29. To see if the Town will pay the Hosemen of the Fire Department the sum of fifty cents per hour while on fire duty, instead of twenty-five cents as now paid.
ART. 30. To see if the Town will give any instructions to the Selectmen in regard to the Reading Water Company, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 31. To see if the Town will sell the Real Estate be- longing to the Town, deeded by John R. Dennett, situate on Avon street, or what they will do in relation thereto.

ART. 32. To see if the Town will expend the sum of thirty- five dollars for a Pump and Watering Trough at the corner of West and Woburn streets.
ART. 33. To see if the Town will erect and maintain a street light at the south-east corner of Prospect and King streets.
ART. 34. To see if the Town will instruct the Selectmen or the Road Commissioners, or whoever may have the authority to appoint a Town Forester, to appoint such an officer for the ensuing year, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 35. To see if the Town will accept in trust the sum of one hundred dollars as by the will of the late Sarah G. Temple, the interest of which is to be expended yearly for the purpose of keeping in order and condition the burial lot and monument owned by the late Mark M. Temple, situate in the cemetery of said town, and belonging to said town.
ART. 36. To see if the Town will accept in trust the sum of fifty dollars from David C. Temple, Administrator, the interest of said sum to be expended yearly for the purpose of keeping in order and condition the burial lot and stones on the same, owned by the late William Temple, No. 379, situate in the Reading cemetery.
ART. 37. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate a sufficient sum to build a new hearse house, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 38. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate the sum of five hundred dollars to move and build a cellar under the barn at the almshouse, and fit up the same, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 39. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate the sum of two hundred and fifty dollars to connect the Hancock engine house bell with the electric alarm, or what they will do in relation thereto.

ART. 40. To see if the Town will authorize the Selectmen to contract with the Reading Water Company to furnish a supply of water for extinguishing fires or other purposes, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 41. To hear and act upon the report of the Selectmen in accordance with the vote of the Town, passed under Article 19 of the warrant, acted upon April 2d, 1888.
ART. 42. To see if the Town will raise and appropriate one thousand dollars to widen and straighten Summer avenue and Brook street, as ordered by the County Commissioners, or what they will do in relation thereto.
ART. 43. To hear and act on the report of the Road Com- missioners on laying out Pratt street, from Woburn street to Prescott street.
ART. 44. To hear and act upon the report of the Road Commissioners on re-locating Sanborn street from Woburn street to Lowell street.
ART. 45. To hear and act upon the report of the Road Commissioners in relation to guide-posts.
ART. 46. To see if the Town will revise and accept the list of names for jurors as prepared and posted by the Selectmen.
Hereof fail not, and make due return of this warrant, with your doings thereon, to the Town Clerk, at or before the time appointed for said meeting.
