MILLARD F. CHARLES,

Town Clerk.

December 31, 1904.

REPORT OF SELECTMEN

To the Inhabitants of' the Town of Reading :

Your Board of Selectmen herewith submit the following report, for the year ending Dec. 31, 1904.

DEPARTMENT OF STREETS

The Highway Department, which is an important branch of the Town's work, has received our earnest attention. Early in the season a new road machine was purchased which has given very good results in general road work as well as in levelling off snow.

A stone crusher temporarily located in our Town made it possible to purchase 1000 tons of crushed stone at a price which seemed very advantageous to the Town. We have macadamized Haven Street for a distance of 754 feet, 15 feet wide and 6 inches thick, at a total cost of $814.47.

This cost includes the rebuilding of Woburn Street, from Sanborn Street to a point midway between Bancroft Avenue and Chute Street, with the material taken out of Haven Street.

We recommend that the macadam road-building be continued and that a steam roller be purchased in order that our road work may be done to the best advantage.

The work on Beech Street has been completed, the street put in good condition, and a sidewalk made on each side. This is. in accordance with instructions received at the annual Town meeting.

The sidewalk on the north side of Summer Avenue has been built and the wall in the Town drain in the Nichols estate has been completed.

56

PEARL STREET DRAIN

Upon investigation it seemed inadvisable to build the Pearl Street drain. It was impossible to get a right of way across the . adjoining land and there was not sufficient appropriation to lay a covered drain through Pearl and Charles Streets to the ditch.

We recommend the same amount ($750) be appropriated for the purpose of taking care of the water on Pearl Street.

The sidewalk on Grove Street has not been constructed as the street lines are very irregular and a petition was received from residents of Grove Street and vicinity praying that the street lines be established on that portion of Grove Street, between Lowell Street and Forest Street. The petitioners have been heard and we will present a report in regard to the same at the next annual meeting.

ELEVATED TOWER AT THE MAIN AND ASH STREET CROSSING

In accordance with the vote passed at the annual Town meeting a petition signed by the Selectmen and others was sent to the Middlesex County Commissioners requesting that Ash Street be relocated in such a manner as to bring it into Main Street at the Crossing. At the hearing which was held at the Reading station so much opposition to the plan developed that it seemed best to the County Commissioners to again refer the matter to the Town.

A special meeting was held Sept. 26, 1904, and in accordance with instructions received at that time your Board has by corres- pondence and conference endeavored to have the gatemen replaced on the ground. Having failed to accomplish this we have petitioned the R. R. Commissioners.

LAW SUIT AGAINST THE TOWN

The suit of the Middleton Paper Mills vs. Town of Reading is still in the hands of our Attorney.

PLAYGROUND

In accordance with instructions received, that we secure a

57

suitable field for a playground, we have leased the same field that was used last year. The conditions of the lease remain the same.

The financial statements concerning the various departments will be found in the following pages, and to these we invite your earnest attention.
