REPORT OF SELECTMEN
To the Citizens of Reading:
The annual report of the Board of Selectmen and the reports of the various departments under our jurisdiction are herewith submitted, all reports being rendered for the year ending December 31, 1926.
The first meeting of the Selectmen following the annual election was held March 5, 1926, and organization was as follows: Robert E. Parker, Chairman; Charles F. Trevor, Secretary.
Regular weekly meetings and six special meetings were held during the year.
Hearings have been held on fifteen applications for permits to store and to store and sell gasoline. In nine cases the establishment of a public filling station was contemplated; six of which petitions were refused.
Hearings have been held on two applications for permission to build buildings for business purposes of more than one story in height, and three hearings on applications for permission to occupy buildings for the storage of three or more automobiles; the petition in each case being granted.
A public hearing was held on application of Mason Bus Line for per- mission to make unlimited stops in Reading, which permit was subsequently refused.
The following permits to operate motor busses over specified routes were granted: Eastern Mass. Street Railway renewals, Reading-Stoneham, Reading-Wakefield, and Reading-Woburn routes and an original permit to the same company to operate between Reading depot and Mill Street; James Mason from Reading depot to North Reading line with prescribed stops.
The Selectmen's petition to the Legislature for authority for the appointment of a Board of Trustees of Trust Funds having been granted, the following were appointed: Philip H. Tirrell, chairman, to serve for two years; H. Raymond Johnson, to serve for four years; Clarence C. White, to serve for six years.
The necessary negotiations incident to taking of land for school pur- poses were satisfactorily completed early in the year.
Pursuant to votes of the Town, notice of sale of real estate taken for taxes was issued and certain parcels were sold to the highest bidders, the total receipts amounting to $2200.
Rules for the regulation of street traffic in the Town of Reading were adopted by the Board at the meeting of September 3.
A conference was held with a committee of citizens and representa- tives of the Boston & Maine Railroad relative to improvement of conditions
67
at the Reading depot, which would result in greater safety for the traveling public and assurance has been given that the matter will be studied and plans presented for such improvement.
As voted, at the town meeting, June 14, 1926, a Seagrave Suburbanite Combination Fire Truck was purchased, greatly increasing the efficiency of the fire department apparatus.
The fire alarm connection with Wakefield has been completed, as far as Reading is concerned, and will soon be tied up with the Wakefield alarm, giving added protection to both towns.
One of the problems confronting the Board is the increasing amount of motor traffic upon our streets and the demands for adequate police protection. To meet this need an additional patrolman was required and Francis L. Johnson was appointed.
The Board has arranged with the American Gas Accumulator Company to install in Reading Square, subject to the approval and acceptance by the Town, a modern traffic beacon with control; which we believe will give greater protection, both to motorists and pedestrians.
Fully appreciating the fact that economy in government should be consistently practiced, we have endeavored to present the budgets of De- partments under our supervision with this in mind.
The financial statements are found in the Town Accountant Report.
In conclusion we express our appreciation for the continued co-opera- tion of other officials with this Board.
Respectfully submitted,
ROBERT E. PARKER CHARLES F. TREVOR ELIAS B. CURRELL Selectmen of Reading.

ANNUAL REPORT OF VISITOR
To the Board of Public Welfare:
I herewith submit my report for the year 1926.
The work of the Visitor has continued as in past years without ma- terial change. Living conditions have been somewhat better during the year. Several men who have formerly applied for aid were employed at the new school building, and the factories have not been wholly shut down. Part time work at the Rubber Shop has caused hardship for some, but the majority have managed to get along without aid. In almost every case the help given is only partial, every member of a family able to work, is ex- pected to do so. The Visitor recorded 361 calls made on families, beside several trips to hospitals with patients needing medical aid.
All families receiving any help have been recorded in the Confidential Exchange in Boston. The purpose of this exchange is to acquaint the Visitor with all agencies who may formerly have had contact with each family. We would be glad to have all the organizations in town make use of this Confidential Exchange. It would be a help in many ways, especially in eliminating the duplication of aid which sometimes occurs when more than one individual or organization wish to help a family.
The number of families aided is approximately the same as last year, there being seven new families aided, and seven discontinued. Of these last, two were closed by removal from town, two by death, and three by becoming self-supporting after recovery from illness. Two of the new cases were applications for Mothers' Aid, two caused by illness, and three from lack of work. The whole number now receiving aid are 16 families. comprising 56 children, and seven single persons, boarded or receiving a small amount of cash aid.
Oct. 13, 14 and 15, the Visitor attended the meetings of the Mass. Conference of Social Work at Springfield. Each month she also attends the meetings of the Mass. Association of Relief Officers in Boston. These meetings are very helpful, as many social problems are discussed and the experience of social workers and Relief Officers from many cities and towns often help to solve our own problems.
We wish to extend thanks to the Social Service Committee of the Visiting Nurse Association for their work in sending out the baskets of Thanksgiving dinners provided by the school children. Thanks are also extended to the various organizations who gave Christmas dinners, and to the Rotary Club for the interest they have taken through the year in giving pleasure to the children, by having several parties for them, under the leadership of the Visiting Nurse, who has done so much to help build up the health of the children, beside giving them a great deal of pleasure. The School Nurse and members of the Tuberculosis Committee have always

co-operated and have given a great deal of time and assistance as in past years. More than a hundred children were remembered at their homes at Christmas by the generosity of many kind friends and several organizations.
The Visitor is grateful to the members of the Board and to the Clerk, Mr. Bent, for their continued interest and assistance.
Respectfully submitted,
HELEN A. BROWN, Visitor.
