Brookline Town Records.
REPORT.
The committee appointed at a town meeting held at the Town Hall on the 3d day of April, 1867, to examine sites upon which to erect a building for the Town Library, have attended to the duty assigned them, and ask leave to submit the following report :
Your committee, acting upon the intimation given them at the time of their appointment, first considered the question of building in connection with a Town Hall; after careful examination of this matter the com- mittee decided almost, if not quite, unanimously that it would be unwise to attempt to combine a Public Library with the Town Hall in one build- ing. The committee, in the exercise of their judgment, being forced to abandon the idea of one building for the Town Hall and the Library, proceeded to act in reference to a location and plans for a suitable inde- pendent building.
Through our sub-committee we addressed to those of our citizens who were supposed to feel a special interest in the Library question the fol- lowing circular :
BROOKLINE, 19 April, 1867.
Sir,-The undersigned have been appointed a sub-committee to ascertain what suitable sites may be proposed for the erection of a Public Library, and what sums of money may be subscribed by individuals towards the purchase of the several sites or the erection of a building thereon.
There are at present only four sites proposed for the Library, viz. :
1. The lot now occupied by the Town House.
2. The lot on Prospect street, southwest of the Pierce school-house.
3. The lot on the corner of Cypress street and Cypress place.
4. The lot bounded by Harvard avenue, Harvard street and Auburn street.
Will you oblige us by answering the following questions :
How much will you subscribe towards the erection of a Library build- ing on either of the above-named lots?
What other lot would you suggest as suitable for the building?
How much would you subscribe towards the purchase of the lot you suggest or the erection of the building thereon?
An early answer, addressed to either of the undersigned, will oblige.
WILLIAM ASPINWALL. JOHN E. HORR. CHARLES DWIGHT.
To this circular the committee received several answers covering sug- gestions, and expressing preferences as to different sites, and propositions of liberal subscriptions in aid of the purchase of their several favorite sites were also received from several gentlemen. Your committee, in view of these propositions and the probability of securing their aid, should the town adopt any of the sites named, conferred personally as individuals with many of our citizens in relation to the different sites proposed. The investigation thus made forced your committee to the conclusion that there was a very general concurrence of opinion in favor of the location which the committee had agreed by a unanimous vote to recommend conditionally to the town. The committee therefore recom- mend to the town to purchase about 25,000 feet of land adjoining the lands of the town west and north of Prospect street agreeable to a plan and at prices herewith submitted. Such land being obtained, we recom-

mend to the town to erect a suitable Library building upon the land now owned by the town, known as the "Fay lot."
The committee, in further pursuance of their duty, have, through their sub-committee, obtained plans from several architects, which plans are now in the hands of the committee, subject to the orders of the town. In reference to those plans, the committee have to remark that they deemed a more careful estimate of the cost of two or more of the pro- posed buildings requisite, before an absolute decision would be reached so as to establish fairly the preferences of your committee for any one plan.
In order that definite action may now be taken by the town upon this matter, your committee ask leave to submit, for the action of this meeting after this report is disposed of, certain votes in pursuance of the object for which they were appointed. All of which is respectfully submitted.

The sub-committee for procuring plans for a Public Library in Brook- line submit to the town-
1st. A plan made by Messrs. Ware & Van-Brunt, estimated to cost $26,000.
2d. The plan made by L. Weissban for the Cypress street lot, with a new elevation, in brick and free-stone, which may be perhaps more suit- able for the position now contemplated.
The estimates of the cost of this building is $23,900, at which price Mr. Weissban assures me that responsible men will take the contract.
Respectfully submitted.
EDWARD ATKINSON, Chairman of Sub-committee.
