That our first Parents sinned and in consequence by a holy and wise constitution all mankind their natural posterity are born in sin and guilt and are become justly deserving of God's wrath and curse forever. - That God of his mere soverign grace, found out and entered upon a method to save man from

P. 6

the state of guilt and ruin which he naturally ia so as at the time to maintain the honor of his law and government by a mediator.

That this mediator is the second person the adorable Trinity; the eternal son of God, who by taking the human nature into a personal union with himself, became truly man, and has by dying suffered the curse of the Law and yielded a perfect and glori - ous obedience to it in our stead. That having made expiation for sin and brought in an everlasting Righteousness by his obedience and death he rose from the dead and ascended into the heavens and is seated at the right of God, to reign a King of Heaven and Earth till all things shall be put under his feet, and is able to save all such as come to God by him.

That every one who believes and truly trusts in him, or accepts of him as he is offered in the Gospel, shall be pardoned and received to favor, however guilty and unworthy in himself, purely & only on account of his merit and worthiness imputed to them who are united to him by a living faith.

That they who believe in Christ are certainly entitled to ever - lasting life

and shall assuredly be preserved in faith and holiness to the end, this being promised in the covenant of grace to all who lay hold of it - That man is so far sunk in sin and darkness, being wholly corupted and an enemy to God and the Gospel, that he will not of himself accept and believe in Christ; whatever external means are used with him, but must be brought to this by the powerful influence of the spirit of God by which a new heart is given or a principle of holiness is implanted. That no sinner by anything that he does lays God under any obligations to grant him his regenerating grace but God always does this when he grants it as a free soverign gift as having mercy on whom he will have mercy and leaving whom he will to hardness. 1

P. 7

That the true believers are by Christ delivered from the curse of God's law, yet their obligations to perfect conformity to its precepts are not in the least removed; they therefore will not be sinless until they are brought to perfect obedi- ence to God's law, which some attain to in this life but are sinfully defective in all their holy exercises.

That all the promises of the Gospel are made to trusty holy exercises and none but such; none can have any evidence of their interest in Christ, but by a consciousness of their own holy exercises, and by coming to a certain knowledge of this as they may they can obtain assurance of their own salvation.

That Jesus Christ has a true church in the world which he will maintain and build up until it shall be brought to its most perfect and glorious state.

That at the last day, Christ will raise the dead and judge the world, and doom the wicked to everlasting desctruction, and receive the redeemed to the happiness and glory of his Eternal Kingdom.

Church covenant Adopted by the church of Christ in Hartwood.

We looking upon ourselves under indespenable obligations to own Christ before men and to walk in fellowship with his visible church on earth, Do now publicly and solemnly avouch the Lord Jehovah to be our God, and do as far as we know our own hearts cheerfully devote ourselves to him thru Jesus Christ.

143

WASHINGTON, MASS. - Church.

We renounce all the ways of sin, and dedicate our selves to serve the Lord, choosing him as our lawgiver and eternal portion. Sensible of our blindness, guilt and infinite un- worthiness, we choose christ as our divine teacher and rely upon his merit and worthiness alone for pardon and accept- ance with God and receive the holy spirit as our sanctifier, heartily embracing the way of salvation revealed in the Gospel .

P. 8

We take God's holy word to be our only rule of faith & practice, and solemnly engage by the help of his grace sincerely to conform to it, and be governed by it in our lives and conversation, and we promise to engage faithfully and obediently to attend upon all the ordinances of the Gisrel; Baptism and the Lord's supper, the public worship of God, and strict observance of his holy Sabbath; and we engage to maintain secret and family religion, and faith- fully to instruct educate and govern our children and all that shall be under our care.

We also covenant with one another to walk together in a church state in all mutual helpfullness, watching over and admonishing one another, and faithfully and impartially to , exercise the instituted discipline of the Church of Christ, according to the rules of his holy word, and meekly to submit to the same, taking constant care to walk orderly in all things, so as to give occasion of offence to none, and we do now publicly espouse and engage in the cause of Christ in this town, promising to be faithful in it & to endeavour to promote it in all proper ways. Especially seeking to recommend our holy religion to all, by our strict and constant practice of Godliness & all Christian virtues.

All this we engage in a humble dependance on Jesus christ, praying that he would enable us to be faithful to his strengthening us to every good work to do his will, working in us that which is well pleasing to him, to whom be Glory forever and ever. Amen.
