PREFACE.
We have but a few words to say in a preface. The character of this work is easily judged by its title. While we do not claim to present a perfect Business Directory, we feel satisfied that this will be found to be as accurate as the nature of the work will ad- mit of. Our Directory is made up from actual canvassing, and where errors may be found to occur, they most generally can be placed to the account of those furnishing the canvassers with information. Many parties, who contemplate removing, have refused to give their names, &c., preferring to have them left out altogether, than to appear and, after having removed, mis-direct the customer.
Our thanks are justly due to those whose advertisements appear herein, for the cour- teous manner in which our canvassers have been received, and it affords us a degree of pride to be able to refer to them as representing the leading houses in their several branches of business in this city, and can safely recommend them to the stranger customer.
To the Merchants of the South and West, where a large portion of this work will be extensively circulated, we can conscientiously recommend those advertising in this book as being well worthy their patronage, and as being able to supply their demands on as good, if not better, terms than any other house north of Baltimore.
When names appear in bolder letters in the body of the book we wish to remind all that they are paid for, and those that were canvassed and did not pay to have them dis- played thus, have but themselves to blame; we trust they will profit by the past and do likewise in the future.
As it is our intention to continue the publication of this Business Directory annually, we would respectfully ask of the business community a continuance of their patronage, so liberally bestowed upon this, our first edition.
