SOME INTERESTING FACTS

FOR THE

Investor, Manufacturer, Homeseeker, Tourist

AND THE

GREAT PUBLIC IN GENERAL

L ET us first sum up in a brief way what Baltimore has accomplished in the two years which have passed since the great fire which en- tirely wiped out the heart of the business section.

The value of the buildings destroyed by the fire, according to the Appeal Tax Court's estimate, was $12,908,300.

The value of the buildings erected since the fire, according to Building Inspector Preston's estimate, is $20,000,000.

The Burnt District Commission has done excellent work and de- serves great credit. They have acquired over 700 lots for the widen- ing of streets and docks, and this, together with the high class of buildings which our merchants have erected, make our new dis- triet a business section of which Baltimore is justly proud.

N OW let us look at Baltimore from the standpoint of the investor and try to enumerate a few of the reasons for and advantages of investing money in Baltimore.

FIRST-Nothing will be permitted to occur which would tend to blockade progress towards the Greater Baltimore.

SECOND-It is one of the greatest shipping ports in the United States, being the chief distributing point for the North and West of all the tropical and semi-tropical fruits, berries and roots. All the riches from the soil of the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida, Alabama and the wonderful and romantic islands of the Caribbean Sea are poured into the lap of Baltimore to be consumed here or distributed upon cities and towns less fortunately situated.

THIRD-Baltimore stands among the first of the grain marts of the world. Recently on a single day 75,000 bushels of corn were shipped from this port. Its elevators and terminals proved equal to this enormous task, and there are plans for more to be made. Its railroads carry the grain direct to tidewater, where vessels lie waiting. Such commerce as this has given Baltimore the right to her title of the LIVERPOOL OF AMERICA.

FOURTH-Before this year is out work will have started on the new Union Station of the Pennsylvania Railroad, which will be one of the finest and most up to date in the country, and so we could go on enumerating, but for lack of space we say to you "INVESTIGATE."

11

TN regard to Baltimore and manufacturers, we say unhesitatingly that it is the PLACE OF PLACES FOR FACTORIES, and we offer a few facts in proof.

Take, for instance, the cost of site-the opportunity for securing ideal sites-the facilities for transportation by land and water-the cheapness of fuel and many other features, there is no other city in the country offers such inducements for the establishment of fac- tories of all kinds as Baltimore does. Thousands of acres of subur- ban land, as well as cheap sites within the city in connection with the inducements of transportation and the ease with which indus- trious workmen may secure cheap permanent homes near to their place of occupation, all invite your earnest attention. In some great lines of manufacturing Baltimore already has the most extensive plants in the world, and the reasons for their location here are those which have been stated as well as many others not mentioned.

F OR the homeseeker Baltimore has many advantages peculiar to itself. all of which cannot but help to make it the ideal place for a home.

In the next few years Baltimore will spend over $50,000,000 for improvements. It will have parks that cannot be surpassed for beauty and attractiveness. It will have a fire department the equal of any in the land. It will have smooth pavements and fine school- houses. It has the finest markets in the world and the busiest. These are of vast importance to the home builder, as they enable him to procure the freshest of vegetables and fruits and all other food of land and sea at lowest possible prices. Again, Baltimore is a city of HOMES, and while the building of new and fine apartment houses in Baltimore is upon a great scale, the increase in the erec- tion of dwellings, which have a low rental, is far in proportion. Whole' blocks of dwellings of two, three and four stories, most of them of the smaller kind, spring up as if by magic in the most at- tractive sections of the city. Never before has there been such a rapid addition of new dwellings, and the real estate men inform us ALL WITH POPULAR PRICE RENTS. You can't make a mistake if you come to Baltimore and make your home.

F OR the tourist Baltimore is, with the possible exception of New York, the most interesting and historic city in the United States. We mention below a few places that you must not fail to see.

BALTIMORE'S POPULATION

N' estimate of the population of a city is a matter necessarily enjoined upon the Directory Publisher. The figures which we herewith tender are arrived at from careful calculation and can be considered practically accurate.

685,020 INCREASE OVER 1905 12,820

Thexe figures represent all persons living or doing business within the city limits and also include all people living in the adjacent suburbs, which are to all purposes a part of our city. A DIRECTORY IS FOR SERVICE.

No person can get the best results from a good Directory except through an understanding of its resources and how to utilize them. To learn the scope of information given in this Directory consult the Index to Contents on Pages 13 to 20.

T O the great Baltimore public we wish to extend our thanks for its hearty co-operation with us in our efforts to publish in Baltimore a City Directory which shall be in keeping with New and Greater Baltimore.

R. L. POLK & CO., OF BALTIMORE, Publishers.

W E wish to make special mention to the many readers of this book of our advertising section-pages 1317 to 1516-placed directly in the center of this book. If the great Baltimore public will "get the habit" of turning to these pages when they want to find out where they can buy a certain article or who they can get to do a certain piece of work they will save themselves much time and worry and will be as- -ured of getting only the best from any of the people whom they find rep- resented on these pages.

THINK IT OVER.

We also wish to call attention to the wide circulation which our Baltimore City Directory has, and we know that the public will then feel amply repaid for the trouble and pains that they have gone to in assisting us to compile this work.

In practically every city in the United States of 50,000 inhabitants and over our City Directory will be placed on file for the use of all the people in that city, and in addition to this the publishers have this year made arrangements to place a copy of our 1906 Baltimore City Directory into practically all towns of any im- partner in the entire South absolutely free of charge, covering every state from the Atlantic Coast west to the Mississippi River, and from Maryland south to the Gulf of Mexico.

We feel assured that the placing of this index to our city into the midst of the great South cannot but help to be of great advantage in bringing Baltimore closer to the South and in making the ties which bind them together another link stronger.

We shall endeavor from year to year to continue to place our City Di- rector throughout the South and to in every way possible educate the Southern people to the knowledge that these Directories are placed there for their use in order to get them closer and better acquainted with our city, which is the natural distributing point for that entire country.

The people of these towns are prone to judge our city by our City Directory, so let us all endeavor to make it the best City Directory in the United States and a credit to Baltimore.
