The People Make a Town, Not The Town The People

No Let Up In Building The Greater Baltimore

Commercial And Civic Organizations Are A Unit In Aiming To Make The City A Great Metropolis

T HE Publishers of the City Directory note, with a feeling of pride, that the merchants of Baltimore have not abated in the least the spirit of enterprise making for a Greater Baltimore ; that was quickened by the fire catastrophe in 1904. Perusal of the pages of this Directory attests this.

The names appearing in black type represent the energy and push of the city, and it is a pleasure for the publishers to make the public acquainted with them. They are the people who accomplish the wonders in business here and make the city what it is. They recognize and support all the public necessities and things needful to improve and serve a city of Baltimore's size. They are not the drones who wait for others to do things, and then appear on the scene to filch what profit they can.

Contentment Kills Ambition.

What our merchants have particularly to guard against, amidst this great commercial and industrial awakening, is a too great sense of contentedness and complacency. It is often the case, when a com- munity is too bountifully blessed in gifts of nature and advantageous location, that a feeling of lassitude sets in. While geographical loca- tion and natural attractions are fine possessions, they do not build municipalities. Contentment retards growth and progress in the State as well as in the individual.

Discontent of the proper kind-research, delving, doing things, keeping everlastingly at it-are the qualities that have produced the commercial and industrial wonders of today.

Good citizenship means more than morality and keeping out of jail. It means local pride. No city on earth is more susceptible to the effects of public energy and activity than Baltimore. The city offers to its people and to the many who are coming, and yet to come to dwell within its bounds, unparalleled opportunity. It is necessary first that our own people realize fully what they possess. Then, appreciating the vast resources, strive to improve, to develop them. Then let the world know it. These are the things the Merchant and Manufacturers' Association, the Travelers and Merchants' Associa- tion and other kindred bodies are striving to do. The men who com- pose these organizations have had vividly impressed upon their minds, by various means, the magnificent oportunities confronting the city of

becoming a great metropolis, and, through intelligent co-operation and unity of aim, they are pushing the city to that goal.

Baltimore a Natural Metropolis.

Not all citizens realize that Baltimore is a natural metropolis. She is a hundred miles nearer to Pittsburg, Cleveland, Chicago and the West than New York. She stands midway between the North and South, with Europe, Africa and South America linked to her by the sea. In the assembling of raw material she is the best placed of the Atlantic cities. She is nearest to the rich areas of corn, rice, cotton and lumber. All the coal of West Virginia is at her back door, and the iron ore of Cuba comes directly to her furnaces. She lies in the heart of great mineral deposits-coal, iron ore, marble and other stones and the finest of sands. Here are the essentials for the manu- facture of iron and steel and glass, to say nothing of their importance in building materials for home construction and shipment. In addi- tion to the power produced from coal, she is soon to secure a great accession of power from the floodgates of the Susquehanna river.

Industrial Conditions in Baltimore.

The recent panic did not affect Baltimore as it did some other sections of the country. In some lines of business there was quite an increase of business during the year 1908. This is made evident from the rebate system which the Merchants and Manufacturers' Associa- tion has applied for the past few years. There was an increase of 10 per cent. in 1908 over 190,7, as shown by the amount purchased by those who registered and obtained rebates. This was obtained at a cost 10 per cent. less than that of 1907 on the part of the association. Using this rebate movement as a thermometer, it would indicate that there was an increase in 1908 over 1907; a remarkable showing in view of general industrial and commercial conditions throughout the country.

During the year 24 new industries were established here. Some of these industries, which have been in existence about 11 months, increased their business about 400 per cent.

There are 121 different kinds of industries here with about 3,000 factories, the value of the manufactured products of which approxi- mate $250,000,000. The jobbing trade amounts annually to $300,- 000,000, and the prospects for great increase in the future are most bright.

Great improvement in the shipping facilities is being made. The harbor and channel are being deepened, the new wharves will add materially to the care and facility of shipping, and a new coast- wise line has been added. There is now an agitation for bridging the Chesapeake Bay, and this means much for the business interests of Baltimore.

A City of Homes.

Baltimore is essentially a city of homes. She has more than 100,000 of them, with plenty of schools, parks and amusements for her people. The cost of living and conducting business here is cheaper than in any other mercantile and manufacturing center in the United States. Rents, buildings, lots, prices of food and clothing, and other necessaries require a moderate outlay as compared with the cost of the same items elsewhere.

INTRODUCTORY.

What Baltimore is Doing.

Numerous municipal improvements are in progress. More than $25,000,000 is to be expended. A sewerage system costing beyond $10,000,000 is in process of construction, while spacious boulevards are being laid out amid the hills and valleys around the city.

Within the city are 511 miles of paved and only 39 miles of un- paved streets. Recently vast changes were made in the nomenclature of these streets. About 1,000 changes were made. New names were given to thoroughfares whose names conflicted; one name was as- signed a street whose different parts or continuations had different names; and, also, one name to such streets that had more than one name for the same parts or entire lengths. All the changes are to be found in the street directory in the front part of this book.

Some Things Worth Knowing.

Six railroad systems, with a mileage equal to all the railways of France, focus at the docks of Baltimore and connect with all parts of the world via 35 steamship lines.

Taking in an area (32 square miles) of less than that occupied by St. Louis, Pittsburg, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Boston, New Orleans and many smaller cities, the population is about 700,000. It is the sixth largest city in the United States.

Baltimore, verily, is the ideal spot in this country for trade, for manufacture, for education, for social advtanages, for the higher professions, for health and for life.

It needs only to be known to be appreciated. The opportunity for growth in every municipal way is unsurpassed. Every man, woman and child should be thankful that he lives here. Know your town, talk it, and invite people who do things, to come here to take advantage of Baltimore's opportunities.

Baltimore's Population.

An estimate of the population of a city is a matter necessarily enjoined upon the Directory Publisher. The figures which we here- with tender are arrived at from careful calculation and can be con- sidered practically accurate.
