PREFACE
Some year ago the compiler was searching for certain early marriage records, and was directed by the Right Reverend Alfred Harding, D.D., Bishop of Washington, to the Broad Creek or Piscataway Parish Records. These are the oldest records for Washington, and are amongst the oldest for the Province and State of Maryland. They begin in 1693, and have been prepared in manuscript to appear in the subsequent volume, with other valuable and hitherto unpublished records.
The early Parish Records contain the compulsory recording of mar- riages, births, deaths, trials, etc., irrespective of religious affiliations, and were the public records kept before the formation of the counties. These records are not complete, but every entry has a bearing historically and genealogically upon localities and families throughout the United States and England.
COLONIAL CENSUS OF 1776
The deficiencies in the preserved Church Records, inscriptions, etc., led the compiler to search for other collateral data. A valued friend sug- gested the Archives of Maryland as containing valuable material, and they were drawn upon through the active cooperation of the Maryland Historical Society.
A Century of Population Growth in the United States, 1790-1900, Wash- ington, 1909, pp. 3-4, says:
The necessity for a national census, comprehending all the states, became apparent early in the Continental period (1774-1789). During the War of the Revolution, the Continental Congress had authorized and directed the issue of $3,000,000.00 in bills of credit. It had also resolved that the credit of the Thirteen United Colonies should be pledged for the redemption of these bills; that each colony should provide ways and means to redeem its proportion in such manner as it should see fit; that the proportion of each colony should be determined by the number of its inhabitants of all ages, in- cluding negroes and mulattoes; and that it should be recommended to the colonial authorities to ascertain in the most confidential manner their respective populations, and to send the returns, properly authenticated, to Congress. Massachusetts and Rhode Island took a census upon this recommendation in 1776, but most of the colonies failed to comply.

PREFACE
man's Magazine, Vol. xxxiv, page 261. Nowhere do we find any reference to the Maryland Census of 1776.
Through the active interest and assistance of Hon. Edwin Warfield, President of the Maryland Historical Society, and of its Council and Li- brary Committee, permission was granted to photograph and reproduce important documents in connection with the related Parish and other records. A portion of the Census of 1776 is therefore herein repro- duced as an important historical contribution to the early history of Maryland.
Heads of Families, First Census of the United States, 1790, enumerates the male head of the family, and gives the number of children, including the mother, etc. The Colonial Census of 1776, Maryland, part of which is herein reproduced in facsimile, enumerates "all souls," largely by names, even of babies, giving all ages at the time of enumeration. Peculiar value attaches to such information from whatever angle the data may be con- sidered. One subscriber summarizes by saying "There is nothing to be found like this publication."
The expense involved in reproducing pages in facsimile, upon perma- nent uncoated paper, is deemed to be justified by reason of the resulting accuracy and permanency. To avoid all possibility of error through cleaning the plates, artistic appearance has been sacrificed, and the per- petuated blemishes occurring in the old and yellow documents bear mute testimony to the accuracy of the facsimiles. The remainder of the valu- able Census of 1776 will probably be later published, if the support for the project justifies the expenditure. Those who desire such additional publication of the record will confer a favor upon all concerned if they will soon communicate with the compiler of this volume.
Especial attention is directed to the fact that this Census of 1776 (Frederick County in this volume, and certain unpublished parts of the census) is a census not only of Maryland, but also of the twenty-mile strip of former Pennsylvania soil and inhabitants brought into Maryland by the location of the Mason and Dixon Line (1763-1767). This should broaden the support accorded the publication, as the title might be made to read "Maryland and Pennsylvania Records, etc."
In using the Census of 1776 deduct from 1776 the figure following the individual enumerated, and you have the year in which the said individual was born. In the Census for Prince George's County, pp. 18-88 the ages of all male members of the family follow the name of the male head, and the ages of the female members follow the name of the female head, without giving the separate names of the children and servants. It gives the dates of birth of all living members of the family and is a valuable check list on the membership of the special families in 1776. It enables
vii
PREFACE
the reader to see what probable omissions occur in the enumerated births, etc., of the same families as given in the later volume of Parish records.
Cordial thanks for active cooperation are hereby extended to Hon. Edwin Warfield, President of the Maryland Historical Society, Mr. Richard H. Spencer, Corresponding Secretary, Mr. Robert F. Hayes, Jr., Acting Librarian, Mr. Charles Fickus, and others connected with the said Society; to Mr. Chas. W. Stewart, Superintendent Library and Naval War Records, Washington, D. C., for important suggestions, etc .; to Mrs. Margaret Roberts Hodges and her husband, Mr. George W. Hodges, Annapolis, Md., for important assistance in research and in furnishing valuable manuscript; to Mrs. Bell Merrill Draper (Mrs. Amos G.), Washington, D. C., for research and manuscript; to Mr. Leroy Stafford Boyd, Washington, D. C., for manuscript; to Hon. Hammond Urner, Chief Judge Circuit Court for Frederick County, Frederick, Md., for his inter- est and consent to publish records, and to Miss Nellie Carter Garrott, Frederick, Md., for copying the said records; to Mr. Ernest Helfenstein, Frederick, Md., for research and for manuscript. The accomplishment of the latter gentleman in perpetuating old tombstone records about to be forever lost is especially commended to numerous others who are in position to copy valuable records in the older portions of the United States. Dr. Edward B. Mathews, Baltimore, Md., very kindly granted the use of the Map of Maryland, etc., from his admirable The Counties of Maryland, etc., elsewhere acknowledged.
Cordial thanks are also extended to Mr. Ernest Lindsley Crandall for his skillful photographs of the original records; to the Joyce Engraving Company for skillfully making most of the illustrations, and to the Wav- erly Press, Messrs. Williams and Wilkins, Baltimore, Md. (especially Mr. John K. Mount who has shown continuous interest in the solution of the problems encountered in the work). Further mention will be made of the Right Reverend Alfred Harding, Bishop of Washington, and to other friends who have materially assisted in furthering the success of this undertaking, in connection with the subsequent volume to be issued next year. Further assistance by directing attention to unknown and newly discovered Maryland records, and by stimulating increased subscrip- tions for the several volumes will be greatly appreciated. To all the numerous active co-workers warmest thanks are hereby extended, and the hope is expressed that this volume may prove to be one of much interest and permanent value.
