Tombstone Inscriptions from the Original Church Yard of All Saints' Parish, Frederick, Maryland (Complete)*

All Saints', the mother parish of Western Maryland, was created by Act of Assembly October 29, 1742: An "Act for dividing Prince George's Parish, in Prince George's County, and for erecting a parish out of the same, called by the name of 'All Saints' Parish.'" About three years later, when the town of Frederick was laid out by Dulaney, three lots on All Saints' Street were obtained, on a portion of which the parish church was built, and the surrounding church yard became the parish burying ground. Its use as such continued until 1852, and during this period it became the place of interment of many of the most prominent and influential citizens of Frederick County. Revolutionary heroes and men prominent in church and state were buried there, amongst the vaults erected being those of Thomas Johnson, Maryland's first governor; Worthington Johnson, John Grahame, Col. John McPherson and A. B. Hanson. In the early days of its history a definite portion of the lot was reserved for burial of bodies of slaves; but, as the demand for space increased with time and use, restrictions became necessary and a grave- yard for colored members and slaves of church families was provided on an adjoining lot, outside of the church yard proper. The removal of the church building in 1814 provided additional space for burying pur- poses, but this relief was merely temporary and soon again all available space was in use. Efforts to purchase adjoining land came to naught, so that the church authorities were forced to again use the land that already contained graves. It was largely as a result of this condition, and through the efforts of men identified with All Saints' congregation, that the present Mt. Olivet Cemetery, of Frederick, was organized in 1852. After this date interments in the old church yard virtually ceased. The removal of the remains of some of the most prominent members began soon after this date, resulting in a lack of interest in the old yard, with consequent neglect. There still remained however a feeling of sentiment which prevented action on the part of the vestry until in 1914 it was able to reverently and carefully remove to a well selected and amply large section of Mt. Olivet all that could be found of those formerly

buried in All Saints' Grave Yard. Of the total of three hundred and twenty-four bodies thus removed to Mt. Olivet, only seventy could be identified; while of the three hundred and eighty removed to the colored cemetery, virtually all were of unknown persons and from unmarked graves. The old yard is a vacant lot and for sale. Only about ten of the old tombstones were re-erected in Mt. Olivet, the remaining ones were placed under ground with the remains. These inscriptions are therefore especially important.
