PREFACE.

THE immense labor and perplexities of canvassing and printing a Second Edition of this work has been accomplished, and the publisher herewith sends it forth to its patrons with the renewed confidence of its giving as much satisfaction as the First, which he is here gratified in being able to say was universal. His capa- city and facilities are ample for the compilation and printing of such a work; and, although it has not been sufficiently remunera- tive, he has an abiding hope, that by making cach successive edi- tion as fully correct and reliable as can possibly be done, his fellow- citizens will, in the future, appreciate and encourage him more liberally, so that he may be able to publish an Annual Edition. Although strenuous efforts were made, the number published of the First Edition was only 1,800, the Second, 1,900, requiring very little calculation to see that the profits are anticipatory in future Editions, by establishing a good character for such a publi- cation

The reader will realize the vast labor performed, from the fact of there being in round numbers, 46,000 names in the work- showing an increase of 10,000 over the last edition, and contain- ing, in printer's technicals, 1,848,000 ems. A large corps of can- vassers for names (not for advertisements) required eight weeks, not losing one working day by inclement weather. The Printing was accomplished in 23 working days-an exploit never equaled before in Baltimore.

This work contains, in addition to the Directory proper, a Busi- ness Directory and other useful information, needed ; but the pub- lisher only professes to publish a Reliable City Directory, and that accomplished, should be satisfactory.

4

The publisher feels it his privilege here to refer to another Directory being published in opposition to his edition. He has not objected to a gentlemanly business competition, but to mis- representation and falsehood-many citizens having called at the publication office to say that they were imposed upon by the other party, by representing that "Woods had abandoned his publica- tion"-that "it was Woods' Directory they were getting out," &c. Now, all this he resisted, and it is with grateful feelings he an- nounces, that the people of his native city met the imposition with overwhelming indignation.

Woods' Directory is an entire Home publication, and worthy the patronage of the citizens of Baltimore.

He returns his warmest thanks for the kind feelings manifested towards him in the course of the publication, and for the uniform courtesy extended to his canvassers in giving them the desired information.
