INTRODUCTION
With much pleasure, the fourth volume of THE MARY- LAND CALENDAR OF WILLS is at last placed before its pub- lic; a volume of great interest, containing, as it does, the wills of some of the most important men and women of the early days of the Province. It may be fitting to offer an apology for the long hiatus between the publication of this and the preceding volume and also to give some explanation of the reason.
Many obstacles have arisen, which have had to be over- come in the preparation of this number of the series, but the most important one has been geographical.
With the Will Books in the Land Office at Annapolis, and the compiler living in Boston, obtaining the data has been no easy task. Indeed, at one time it seemed almost inevitable that the work would have to be aban- doned. At last, however, a Maryland woman responded to my need of a collaborator, who should possess enthu- siasm as well as the trained ability necessary, and thus Mrs. Roberta Bolling Henry became associated with the work.
These qualities are indeed requisite, for the presenta- tion of these volumes requires conscientious, painstaking effort as well as selective sense, and our reward is the realization that by means of the series all data in the colonial wills, which is of historical or genealogical value, or of importance in tracing properties, is given in con- densed form to our contemporaries, and their substance is preserved to posterity even should the old books crumble away.
Some wills which have been found in other records than the Will Books have been added as an appendix, as they would be out of place in the body of the book.
Our thanks are ever due to the Commissioner of the Land Office and the gentlemen associated with him for the courtesy and assistance they constantly extend to us.
JANE BALDWIN COTTON.

The name of the testator is in Bold Type; those persons bear- ing relationship to the testator, if stated in the will, are in bold type also. All others are in Roman Type. The county of testator follows the name in the same line if it is given in the will itself, and if none appears in the abstract the inference must be drawn that it is lacking in the will.
The dates of drawing and of the probate of each are placed one above the other, opposite the name of testator; that of probate under that of drawing. If either date does not appear in the Calendar a line of dashes is placed in the respective place to indicate the fact that it is lacking in the will as recorded, and if, as is the case in a few instances, neither date or drawing nor that of probate appears in the will, a double line of dashes is substituted.
The numbers at the foot of each abstract give the number of the book and the page from which it has been taken. The book numbers and not the old liber numbers are used, this being in accordance with the system usual with genealogists in making notes from these books.
It will be seen that in many instances overseers or trustees are named by testators. The custom now being obsolete it is best ex- plained by a quotation from one of the wills where a testator, after designating several friends for the office, adds: "who shall assist the executrix in the care of the estate that neither she nor the chil- dren be wronged!"
Nunc. placed after a name indicates that the will was a nuncupa- tive one.
Young. is used in the calendar as the abbreviation of youngest.
Test., the abbreviation of testis and testes, has been adopted in accordance with the custom of the times rather than the more modern term of witnesses. The other abbreviations and terms are so simple that explanation of them seems needless, since they do not differ from those in ordinary use.
