PREFACE.

THE Publisher of the BALTIMORE CITY DIRECTORY presents this volume of the series, more enlarged than any of its predecessors, and having all the claim to accuracy, (and hence to approval,) which is founded on unwearied industry in exploration, long experience, and an earnest desire on his part to render the work, what its name imports, a reliable source of information as to the places of abode and of business and the occupation of all the permanent residents of our city.

Mindful of the encouragement hitherto-since his first publication of the Baltimore Directory-received by him from his fellow-citizens, he has sought most sedulously to render this issue worthy of their continued patronage.

As additions to our local population arise, the compilation and publication of such a work, necessarily increased accordingly in bulk, involve greater outlay of labor, time and capital.

The Advertising department will be found highly useful to our community and to visitors of our city ; and experience of the result to advertisers in past years, justifies the assertion that this medium of facility to all will be found satisfactorily remunerative to the parties thus advertising.

The necessity of continuous issue of the series from year to year, arising from the changes of former and creation of new places of abode or business, is apparent; and it is only by regular adoption by the public of the volumes as issued that the advantage designed to be extended to them can be secured fully. A failure on the part of subscribers to take regularly the duly published work, exhibiting the changes referred to, as well as the increase accrued, ope- rates not only to the disadvantage but to the discouragement of the Publisher. The appositeness of this remark is shown by the fact that on each new issue it is found that at least two-thirds of the localities or names to be indicated have been changed in the interval.

. When even a limited number of subscribers decline taking a new issue, hop- ing to scramble on upon its predecessor, they not only exclude themselves from a reliable source of information, the occasion for using which is of daily, almost hourly, recurrence, but their declension actually extinguishes the reason- able profit that should enure to the Publisher, by whose enterprise, unusually arduous labor and capital, the regular production of the work is accomplished.

Gratefully acknowledging as well past patronage as the courtesy uniformly evinced by every class of Baltimoreans to our canvassers in their arduous work of preparation, and tendering to all our congratulations because of the continu- ously rapid progress and obvious prosperity of our city,

I am the public's obedient servant,

NOVEMBER, 1868.
