BALTIMORE DIRECTORY CO.

Increase

1822-230 KEENAN.

PREFACE.

THIE flattering reception accorded each issue of the BALTIMORE CITY DIRECTORY by all classes of the community, its universal acceptation as an authority in its line, and its large circulation and use have been very gratifying to the publishers, and they are de- termined that no effort of theirs shall be spared to produce a work which, in point of accuracy and completeness of detail in each department, shall be the peer of any of its class.

No work of this kind can be absolutely perfect-each succeed- ing issue of the publication suggests improvements and additions that the publishers take pleasure in adopting. Experience in the past, a close familiarity with the city, its institutions and people, combined with a perfect system acquired by years of close and exclusive attention to works of this description, have, it is con- fidently believed, produced a Directory of the City of Baltimore for 1889 that will prove a reliable work of reference and a faithful exponent of the commercial, manufacturing and numerical import- ance of the progressive city it represents.

The edition for 1888 had a total of 1,178 pages of names, while this edition has 1,230 pages, a gain of fifty-two pages.

The Directory for last year contained the names of 150,764 per- sons. In this volume there are a total of 154,625 names-a gain during the last Directory year of 3,861 names. These figures show that the city is having a steady yearly growth in population, and the Classified Directory presents the fact that almost every trade, profession and manufacturing enterprise known to other leading cities of the country is fully represented.

To produce the results acquired in the Directory has required labor and an outlay of money beyond the comprehension of most people. To those who have given us encouragement and support we return thanks.

Those who never subscribe or contribute to anything for the general welfare, probably the least said is best.

CAUTION TO OUR SUBSCRIBERS.

The fraudulent use of your Directory by your neighbors is an expensive accommodation: an injustice to honest enterprise, and an imposition on us, and we sincerely hope our patrons will refuse the use or loan of their Directories to their neighbors.

Respectfully submitted,

THE PUBLISHERS.
