INTRODUCTORY.

The fifth volume of R. L. Polk & Co.'s Baltimore City Directory is presented with confidence that their efforts to make each succeeding volume the best have been successful.

The appearance and increase in the size of the book are prima facie evidence of improvement, fullness and completeness, and in keeping with the growth and prosperity of the city.

The prime object of a directory is to enroll in alphabetical order the name of every male adult living or doing business in the city, or adjacent to it, with the occupation, business location and residence of each. The many obstacles encountered in the performance of such work require a thorough system with care- ful and experienced employees to secure a full and accurate enumeration. R. L. Polk & Co's system of canvassing for names is the result of twenty-five years' practical experience, and with the series of examinations and checkings to which every item of information is subjected, few errors or omissions occur. Names are taken in duplicate and the fact proven as are accounts in a double-entry system of book keeping. Where they are not proven by the result of the first canvass special messengers are dispatched to ascertain the cause, correct conflicting returns and supply deficiencies.

All the labor upon this book, including compilation, printing, binding, &c., has been done in this city, and a comparison with any of the directories in the United States (which may be found in our Directory Library) will prove that in typographical and mechanical appearance this home-made enterprise is not inferior to any similar publication in any of the large cities.

Our Directory Library contains Directories of all the principal cities of the United States and Canada for the free use of our patrons.

In addition to the benefits which citizens derive from this valuable Library, our Exchange System, which places the Baltimore City Directory in all Directory Libraries throughout the country, serves as an excellent advertisement for our prosperous city, for no other publication can convey such an idea of the city, its growth, its people, with their trades and professions, its schools, churches, societies, banks, railroads and incorporated companies and all the various institutions and organizations. The wide circulation of the Directory enables capitalists and business men in every locality to communicate with citizens and to note the progress and improvements the Directory annually records.

Although the United States and Police Census was taken but six or eight months ago, Baltimore City is growing so rapidly, as clearly evidenced by the increase of names in the Directory, that the usual estimate of population may be no less interesting. The Directory for 1890 gave 159,658 names; the Directory for 1891 contains 164,973 names-an increase of 5,315. This is indicative of an increase in population during the year of 1890 of fully 17,374 souls, and a present population of 536,162. This is figured on a basis of 33, the figure heretofore used to represent the women and children not included in the Directory. While this does not agree with the Government or Police Census, it will be remembered that fully six months have elapsed, covering a period of the year when the greatest influx of population has occurred.

In addition to this, the Directory canvass has not been confined to the city limits, but all the suburbs have been included, and while the estimate of population may seem an exaggeration, we think it is not in excess of the actual number of souls located in Baltimore City and its suburbs. In any event there is an increase of 5,315 names in the Directory in one year, a fact which few cities in the Union can boast. With sincere thanks to all who have patronized the work, the Press and the Public in general, we are Respectfully, &c.,

R. L. POLK & CO., Publishers.
