Time is not wasted in sharpening a scythe
** THE BEST equipment, backed by brains, gives the best result. Sharp tools make artistic and thor- ough work. All other things being equal, the better a young man or woman is fitted for the transaction of business, the more quickly such a one attains to a suc- cessful position and the re- wards of same.
FATHER, MOTHER
ARE YOU FULFILLING A PARENT'S RESPONSIBILITY ?
Are you exercising your best judgment and discretion in "THAT BOY's" future? Can you acquit yourself of that responsibility without preparing him for the active contests of life? Can you so prepare him if you do not give to him the opportunity for acquiring a busi- ness education? Are you not aware that more chances of success in life are offered in a business career than any other ; that the thorough business man in this country is the successful man, and that a business education is a better endowment for " THAT BOY" than a fortune? In deciding upon a school, send him to the best - one located in a large city, where there are frequent opportu- nities to secure position -one which has an established reputation and a suffi- cient patronage to warrant first-class appointments and the employment of teachers who are experts in their profession. In this particular
Sadler's Bryant & Stratton College
stands unrivalled. It has furnished more positions for its graduates than all similar institutions in the South combined. The following are a few of the leading firms with whom our pupils are employed :

BRYANT AND STRATTON COLLEGE
SCHOOL OF NEW RAPID
AND TYPEWRITING,
NOS. 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 CHARLES STREET.
The results attained from the introduction of the
NEW RAPID SYSTEM OF SHORTHAND
Have been so satisfactory and our attendance has increased to such an extent that we have just added to our already extensive appointments the new hall over
MACDONALD'S JEWELRY STORE, Which is now being fitted up and furnished especially for our
SHORTHAND DEPARTMENT.
In this improvement we have secured a private entrance for all lady pupils.
The Department of Shorthand is in charge of three expert practical teachers. who devote their entire time to teaching this special branch.
OUR COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT
Is receiving the same liberal attention. We have no all-round teachers -each a specialist in his department. THE DEPARTMENT OF BOOKKEEPING
Is conducted by five special teachers, whose entire energies are given to teaching the science of accounts. THE DEPARTMENT OF PENMANSHIP
Possesses unequaled advantages, and the same is true of our
DEPARTMENT OF ARITHMETIC
And Rapid Business Calculations, both being in charge of the best talent to be had, and each principal devoting his full time to teaching his specialty. The entire school is under the personal supervision of the President and Founder.
In deciding upon a school, GO TO THE BEST, because it pays.
It may require the expenditure of a few more dollars at first, but it will prove the CHEAPEST IN THE END. Everyone contemplating a course of training for business, as well as parents having sons and daughters to educate, should visit and investigate the high standard of ex- cellence of SADLER'S BRYANT & STRATTON COLLEGE. If our claims to superiority in every department are not more than substantiated, and you are not satisfied that our school is the best, you are free to go elsewhere. It is, however, your duty to investigate - not so much on OUR account, but for YOURS- YOUR INTERESTS DEMAND IT.
Day Sessions the Entire Year. Night Sessions from October Ist to April 1st. Students can Enter at any time with Equal Advantages.
For further particulars call at the College, or send for catalogue, which will be mailed on application.

INTRODUCTORY.
HE Sixth Volume of R. L. POLK & Co.'s BALTIMORE CITY DIRECTORY is presented with the assurance that it will be found as full and complete as heretofore. The appearance and increase in the number of names in the work is prima facie evidence of improvement, fullness and completeness, and in keeping with the growth and prosperity of the city.
The prime object of a Directory is to enroll, in alphabetical order, the name of every male adult living or doing business in the city, or adjacent to it, with the occupation, business location and residence of each. The many obstacles encountered in the performance of such work require a thorough system with careful and experienced employees to secure a full and accurate enumeration. Our system of canvassing for names is the result of twenty-six years of practical experience and with the series of examinations and checkings to which every item of information is subjected few errors or omissions occur. Names are taken in duplicate and the fact proven as are accounts in a double-entry system of book- keeping. Where they are not proven by the result of the first canvass, special messengers are dispatched to ascertain the cause, correct conflicting returns, and supply deficiencies.
All the labor upon this book, including compilation, printing, binding, etc., has been done in this city, and a comparison with any of the Directories in the United States (which may be found in our Directory Library), will prove that in typographical and mechanical appearance this home-made enterprise is not inferior to any similar publication in any of the large cities.
Our Directory Library contains Directories of all the principal cities of the United States and Canada for the free use of our patrons. In addition to the benefits which our citizens derive from this valuable library, our "Exchange System," which places the Baltimore City Directory in all Directory Libraries throughout the country, serves as an excellent advertisement for a prosperous city, for no other publication can convey such an idea of the city, its growth, its people with their trades and professions, its schools, churches, societies, banks, railroads and incorporated companies, and all the various institutions and organizations. The wide circulation of the Directory enables capitalists and business men in every locality to communicate with citizens and to note the progress and improve- ments the Directory annually records.
The growth of the city is clearly evidenced by the increase of names in the Directory and the usual estimate of population may be no less interesting. The Directory for 1891 contained 164,973 names; the Directory for 1892 contains 171,721 names-an increase of 6,748. This is indicative of an increase in population during the year of 1891 of fully 21,931 souls, and a present population of 558,093. This is figured on a basis of 3}, the figure heretofore used to represent the women and children not included in the Directory. While this does not agree with the U. S. Government or City Police Census, it will be remembered that fully eighteen months has elapsed since the census was taken. In addition to this, the Directory canvass has not been confined to the city limits, but all the suburbs have been included, and while the estimate of population may seem an exaggeration, we think it is not in excess of the actual number of souls located in Baltimore City and its suburbs. In any event there is an increase of 6,748 names in the Directory in one year, a fact which few cities in the Union can boast.
With sincere thanks to all who have patronized the work, the press and the public in general, we are,
Respectfully, &c.,
R. L. POLK & CO., PUBLISHERS.
