COMPANY B, TWENTY-FIRST VIRGINIA.

O NE of the finest companies to enter the Confederate service from Mary- land was Company B, Twenty-first Virginia Infantry. The company was formed by Captain J. Lyle Clarke, and was composed principally of members of the Maryland Guard, at that time a famous military organization in Baltimore.

This company was mustered into the service at Richmond on the 24th of May. 1861, and sent out to Camp Lee, or rather the Camp of Instruction.

Captain Clarke there found another Maryland company under command of Captain E. R. Dorsey, which had been mustered into the service a few days before, and still later a third company was formed by Captain William H. Murray. These three companies enlisted for one year, but in some unaccountable manner the War Department conceived the idea that the companies of Murray and Dorsey were war companies, and they were consequently sent to Winchester to help form the First Maryland Regiment.

Captain Clarke and the splendid men under his command were dreadfully chagrined at being thus separated from their comrades, and pleaded to be sent after them, but the Secretary of War was inexorable. They were told to remain in camp until other companies were formed, when they would be sent to join the First Maryland, though they were but a battalion.

But, unfortunately, in the meantime troops were badly needed to operate against MeClellan in West Virginia, after General Garnet's defeat at Phillipi, and all of the available companies then at Camp Lee were hastily formed into regiments, and under General Robert E. Lee were sent out to Valley Mountain, Captain Clarke's Maryland company being attached to the Twenty-first Virginia, under Colonel William Gilham, of the Virginia Military Institute.

After the memorable campaign against Rosecranz, in the summer and fall of 1861, the Twenty-first was transferred to the command of Stonewall Jackson, then in the Valley of Virginia, and participated with him in his wonderful campaign in 1862 up to the expiration of their term of service, on May 24.

Captain Clarke had the proud satisfaction of seeing nearly all of the company that had been spared immediately enlist in different branches of the service and those that survived served until the surrender.

Company B was certainly one of the best drilled companies in the Army of Virginia, and General Lee upon two occasions stated that it was the best drilled infantry company he ever saw, not excepting the regulars.

FIRST MARYLAND CAVALRY.

CHAPTER I.

O N the 15th of May, 1862, eighteen young Marylanders who had served one year in Company K, First Virginia Cavalry, but who had refused to re-enlist, believing a Maryland regiment could be formed, met in Richmond and proceeded to organize Company A, which served as the nucleus of what was destined to be one of the most distinguished cavalry commands in the Confederate service. Among these young men were Ridgely Brown, of Montgomery ; Frank A. Bond, of Anne Arundel ; Thomas Griffith, of Montgomery, and J. A. V. Pue, of Howard. Ridgely Brown was elected Captain and the rest Lieutenants as their names stand.

It had long been the desire of these Marylanders to have their State repre- sented in the cavalry arm of the service. They were all dashing horsemen, and, as many kindred spirits had come and were coming to Virginia without any effort being made to organize a larger body than a company, which had been absorbed at once by some Virginia regiment, they built up this company with the express stipulation that it was one around which all future companies of Maryland cavalry were to rally.

Recruiting went on briskly, and in a short time the ranks of Company A were filled up with some of the finest young men who had left the State of Maryland. They were fortunate, too, in the selection of their officers, and under their leader- ship the company subsequently won a reputation second to that of no company in the Confederate cavalry.

After its organization the company was ordered to the Valley of Virginia and attached to Colonel Munford's Second Virginia, there to remain until other cavalry companies had been organized, with which to form a battalion or regiment. In the meantime Company A did good service, serving with Jackson in his memorable Valley campaign. It particularly distinguished itself with Ashby in the engagement near Harrisonburg with Percy Wyndham's First New Jersey Cavalry, and was complimented by General Ewell for its gallantry upon that occasion. It was with Jackson before Richmond, and subsequently in the Maryland campaign, where it distinguished itself in many encounters with the enemy.

Up to this time Company A was the only representative Maryland cavalry company, but upon its return from the Maryland campaign it found that three other fine companies had been formed, and were ready to effect a battalion organization.

In July, 1864, Company K, then under command of Captain Gustavus W. Dorsey, was transferred from the First Virginia to the First Maryland, after having made an enviable reputation during its long service in the Virginia regiment. In many of the official reports of Generals Steuart, Jones and Fitzhugh Lee they make special mention of the conspicuous gallantry displayed by Company K. In one of the many encounters the regiment had with the enemy Lieutenant Rudolphus Cecil was killed. This young officer's dash and daring is spoken of again and again by Fitzhugh Lee in his official reports, and his untimely death was deeply deplored.

After the organization of the battalion it was ordered to Newmarket to unite with the Second Maryland Infantry and Baltimore Light Artillery there encamped. These three commands constituted the Maryland Line.

The winter of 1862-63 was passed at various points in the Valley, with its usual routine of picket duty, and naught else to vary the monotony of camp life. On the 2d of January General William E. Jones made an expedition to Moorefield in hopes of encountering the enemy, but it was fruitless of results, though the old General consoled himself by procuring a portable bake-oven he brought back, the single trophy to commemorate the privations its capture had entailed upon the command. But as the winter disappeared, more stirring events were promised.

On the 23d of February Companies A and D, commanded respectively by Captain Frank A. Bond and Lieutenant William H. B. Dorsey, two daring young officers, were sent on picket near Strasburg. On the evening of the 25th, the men being anxious for some excitement, Captain Bond determined to gratify them. Having learned the exact location of the enemy's pickets, the two companies, comprising sixty men all told, started about 10 o'clock at night on their perilous expedition. At daybreak they arrived to within less than two miles of Winchester, on the Cedar Creek road, and finding the infantry picket, charged through it, receiving a few scattering shots. At the junction of the Cedar Creek and Staunton roads they were met by a volley of musketry from a house, but it did not check them, and turning up the Staunton road toward home they rode down a third infantry picket. At Kernstown they found a cavalry picket quietly warming themselves in a house. This they attacked and fourteen men and fifteen horses were captured, and several of the enemy left dead and wounded in the house. Captain Bond then returned to Strasburg with his prisoners and horses, having lost but one man missing.

The news of the daring raid had in the meantime been conveyed to Milroy at Winchester, and he at once dispatched the First New York and Thirteenth Pennsylvania Cavalry in pursuit. These came upon Bond so suddenly at Strasburg about 8 o'clock in the morning that he had only time to get off his prisoners and make a hasty retreat up the back road, losing one man wounded and one captured.
