This Machine makes the "LOCK STITCH," and ranks highest on account of the elas- ticity, permanence, beauty and general desirableness of the stitching when done, and the wide range of its application .- Report of the American Institute, New York.
The qualities which commend the Wheeler & Wilson Machine are : 1. Beauty and excellence of stitch alike upon both sides of the fabric sewed. 2. Strength, firmness and durability of seam, that will not rip nor ravel, and made with-3. Economy of thread. 4. Its attachments and wide range of application to purposes and materials. 5. Com- pactness and elegance of model and finish. 6. Simplicity and thoroughness of construc- tion. 7. Speed, ease of operation and management, and quietness of movement.
From the Swann Premium Committee, Mechanics' Institute, Baltimore.
The Committee award to the Wheeler & Wilson Sewing Machine, falling, as the Com- mittee think it does, within the description of "the most practical invention adapted to common use, to be estimated with reference to the cheapness and general utility." The Committee had a wide range allowed to them by the laws of the offer of this premium, and have deliberated carefully before coming to their conclusion. There are three ma- chines in the exhibition; and in determining between them, the Committee, guided by the language of the offer, have chosen that which in their opinion is the most likely to come into common use, not only in large establishments, but for the purposes of daily domestic life.

F
PREFACE.
THIE substantial growth of Baltimore is indicated by the large increase of Names and business matter in its City Directory. The present volume will be found to be a· much en- larged and improved issue over the last. The last City Directory was published in October, 1859, for the year ending 1860, contemplating its issue thereafter annually, but owing to the depression of business and civil discord in the community, and the little encouragement extended to the Canvass, the publication was indefinitely postponed. The want of the work has since been so immeasurably felt by citizens, strangers visiting the city, by the City Col- lector, and offices of the City Government, that the City Council generously voted an ap- propriation of $1,000 for 100 copies, and we are happy to state that, after especial efforts, our endeavor to secure an amount of patronage has been, at least, equivalent to the cost of canvassing, printing and binding, and that the present volume will go into the hands of a much greater number of Subscribers than any that has preceded it; another evidence of the elasticity of our business men, and of the revival of trade and commerce.
