The Canvass of our city to obtain the information contained in this work has been the most vexatious and laborious ever prosecuted by us : only those engaged in publication of works of like character can fully estimate the increased labor of a publisher, in collecting and preparing for the press, in the midst of the excitement existing in the public mind dur- ing the weeks our Canvassers were on the streets, taking the Names for the Directory. Our Canvassers were pronounced by some to be "United States Assessors," seeking to fix on the people onerous taxes ; and, by others, they were declared to be "Enrolling Officers," who were using their best efforts to obtain the name of every citizen for military purposes ; and from these and other imaginary causes, delays and refusals in our Canvass were numerous, and of the most troublesome character. Notwithstanding these obstacles and difficulties, through the faithful labors and indomitable perseverance of experienced Canvassers, and the aid rendered us by our friends, we have the confiding hope that its usefulness will be found indispensable, and will meet the approbation and encouragement of the citizens.

THE BUSINESS DIRECTORY .- Particular examination is called to this feature of our work, unusual care being employed in its compilation. Every branch of business is properly registered, and in this particular we have had much to contend with, for frequently it will be found that many persons do such a business, that we have had to place them under several headings, with the difficulty of discriminating the proper ones.

iv

PREFACE.

Our business community has, within the past three months, been unusually annoyed by schemes for "Business Directories." The impudence and pertinacity of these interlopers and adventurers, who feel no interest, apart from pecuniary advantage, in the production of such an important work, are only commensurate with their utter want of capacity and integrity, whilst their intrusive efforts are as valueless to the community as they are prejudicial to the interests of those legitimately engaged in the business. Our Canvassers were frequently met with the remark, "How many Directories are there going to be ?" "We have already given our names several times." We are compelled to reiterate our extreme surprise that our busi- ness men, with the past examples of such enterprises, should have again suffered themselves to be imposed upon by such worthless publications ; and we sincerely trust that future cau- tion will have been purchased by present and past experience.

THE STREET DIRECTORY .- The attention of the public is especially called to our Street Directory, a reference to which enables persons to immediately find the square in which any number is located. Special mention is made of this from the fact that this mat- ter, though of the highest importance, has been overlooked by many ; a glance will convince the observer of the general utility of this Department of the book.

THE ADVERTISING DEPARTMENT .- In the handsome display of these pages, many of the leading mercantile and manufacturing houses of the city will be found represented.

It is important that all persons using the Directory should consult our list of " Alterations and Corrections," as the latest changes are therein noted, and the names of all citizens insert- ed that could not be obtained early enough to be inserted in their proper places in the body of the work.

To the many who have encouraged our labors, we acknowledge our indebtedness, and trust that the disposition manifested to make the book worthy of their support, has not been in vain.
