Founded by George Peabody, Feb. 12, 1857. Corner of Mt. Vernon and Washington Places. The Institute has four Departments :


1. A Library of 56,000 volumes, open from 9 A. M. to 10 P. M., to all callers, being entirely free. The books are not taken from the building.


2. A Lecture Department in which about 100 lectures are given each year on Science, Literature and Art, by the most accomplished scholars of the country at merely nominal prices.


3. An Academy of Music. Instruction given in all branches of Music at greatly reduced prices, and several concerts are given every sea- son at about half the cost of the music.


4. A Gallery of Art, not yet open, but the beautiful statue of Clytie, by Rinehart, presented to the Institute by John W. McCoy; the Venus with the shell ; and a bust of Pocahontas, by Powers; the last two presented by Mr. George S. Brown, are now ou Exhibition. The Insti- tute is only half built, but it is the intention of the Trustees to complete it in the course of two or three years.

THE JOHNS HOPKINS HOSPITAL.


This Hospital was established and endowed by the late Johns Hopkins, and is in course of erection upon the site of the old Maryland In- sane Asylum. The grounds front on Broad- way and Wolfe streets, each 650 feet; and on Monument and Jefferson streets, each 900 feet.


This Hospital is for the reception and treat- ment of the sick and injured, free of charge, and is designed to accommodate 300 persons. It is richly endowed and promises to be one of the largest and best Hospitals in our country.


There is a convalescent Hospital and a Train- ing School for nurses, and an Orphan Asylum for colored children, established by the same benefactor, under the same Board of Trustees.
