PREFACE
Prior to 1912, directories of University of Maine graduates and non-grad- uates appeared periodically as a part of the University Catalogue. Since that date, the directories have been published as separate volumes. This is the sixth directory published as a separate unit. Like the two preceding issues of 1921 and 1929, this directory was compiled by the General Alumni Association and published by the University.
In it are recorded the names of all who have received bachelor, advanced, honorary degrees, and certificates. It also includes the names of a large proportion of the non-graduates.
The directory is organized in five sections. Part I is composed of class lists. Following each name is given the degree received, major subject, ad- vanced degrees with year and institutions conferring the degree, the fraternity affiliation, and residence address. Where the information was available, the position or occupation and business address is also given. The name of the state is understood to be Maine, unless otherwise recorded.
Part II consists of recipients of advanced and professional degrees, ar- ranged according to the year the degree was conferred. It has not been the policy to maintain an active file for this group, believing that if the addresses of those who are not alumni of the University should be needed they could be secured quickly from the institution conferring the first degree.
Part III consists of honorary degree recipients arranged by years.
Part IV consists of geographical list arranged alphabetically by states and towns within states. In this list the names of alumnae appear under their married name, as well as maiden name in parentheses. There are some dif- ferences between geographical location of alumni and the addresses given in the class list, due partly to changes which occurred after class lists were printed, and partly to the fact that circumstances indicate that they are located in the town in which they are listed geographically, although their home ad- dress is given in the class list since that address had been verified in most instances.
Part V consists of the alphabetical arrangement of names. In this list the name of married alumnae appears both under their maiden and married names.
In compiling this directory, effort was made to secure information on every alumnus whose name appears in this volume. Several circulars and many individual letters were sent. So far as seemed practical, post offices were requested to check the addresses of those who did not return directory cards. Probably some of the older alumni for whom no address is given may now be deceased, but this information has not been reported. Standard prac- tices have been used in abbreviations and symbols and in the omission of punc- tuation.
The Alumni Office wishes to express its appreciation for the cooperation of the alumni who filled out and returned the directory cards and especially to the Registrar of the University and his staff in furnishing information and checking data.
3
It may be that there are errors which further careful rechecking would have eliminated. This, however, would have involved delay and additional cost. If information contained in the directory is incorrect, please notify the Alumni Office, 13 Fernald Hall, University of Maine.
