EAST MAINE CONFERENCE SEMINARY.

LOCATION.

This Institution was established in 1851 under the auspices of the East Maine Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

The School is located in the town of Bucksport, Maine, a beautiful vil- lage on the Penobscot river, eighteen miles below Bangor. It is easy of access by means of railroad and steamboats.

The Seminary Buildings stand upon an eminence overlooking the vil- lage, and commanding a view which, for variety and beauty of scenery, cannot be surpassed.

PLAN OF THE INSTITUTION.

The design of its founders was to subserve the interests of the State in promoting the cause of a sound and symetrical education. It has prac- tically and successfully endorsed the theory that in co-education, with proper restrictions, young people obtain the most natural and healthful development of their faculties under conditions which give them the best preparation for future duties and responsibilities. Thorough instruction is furnished in all the various branches of study necessary to prepare for literary pursuits or practical business of life.

The Institution furnishes an advanced course for ladies. There are inl this course two departments, the Belles Lettres and the Classical. The Belles Lettres course requires three years for graduation; the Classical re- quires four years. These courses are complete, thorough and practical.

In music and art the Institution offers most excellent facilities for the education of the taste and for general culture.

The Institution is a College Preparatory School. Those who satisfac- torily complete the curriculum is this department are able to enter any New England College or University.

1-

East Maine Conference Seminary.

The other courses of study are carefully arranged with reference to the particular object in view. To impart a thorough knowledge of the vari- ous subjects treated, and at the same time to inculcate habits of independ- ent thought, is the object toward which is directed the ambition of all connected with the management of the school.

-0-

ADMISSION.

All candidates for admission are expected to be prepared to give satis- factory evidence of good moral character. Students entering any of the regular courses are examined in the studies preparatory to the course or must furnish proof of their preparation. The same evidence of proficien- cy is also required of candidates for advanced standing.

PROMOTION.

Pupils are promoted in the courses in each separate study, from term to term, upon passing satisfactory examinations in the work performed.

Those not in regular courses can join, without examination, such class- es as are adapted to their attainments, and special pains will be taken to form classes for their accommodation.

-0-

COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT.

This department designs to furnish young men and women with a thorough business education. A practical course of instruction has been adopted which cannot fail to give entire satisfaction to all concerned.

TIME OF ENTERING.

Students may enter at any time during the school year, but it is desira- ble that they should enter at the beginning of a term.

-0-

GENERAL PLAN OF INSTRUCTION.

The student is first instructed in the theory of accounts, learning care- fully all principles applying to the simplest business transaction and extend- ing them to the more complicated departments of trade. He is taught that the several changes in a merchant's business require a corresponding change in his method of keeping books. After he has become thorough- ly familiar with preceding principles, he is given a series of carefully graded sets, taken from actual business transactions, and is required to write them out in full. His books are balanced often, his assets and lia- bilities determined and a full statement of gains and losses are made and entered.

One hour per day is devoted to Commercial Arithmetic. Special atten- tion will be given daily to students in Penmanship.

COMMERCIAL PAPERS.

The student is required to write in full Commercial Papers, including bills, orders, drafts, bills of exchange, mortgages, insurance policies, &c., as he advances in his course. He also receives instruction in business cor- respondence ; spelling, punctuation and the use of capitals receiving care- ful attention.

CLASSES.

There is no class system, but each student receives special instruction adapted to his pecular wants and capacity. He is allowed to proceed as rapidly as is consistent with a thorough comprehension of preceeding principles.

25

East Maine Conference Seminary.
