REPORT

OF THE

SUPERVISOR OF SCHOOLS.

The undersigned respectfully submits the following "reports of the condition of the schools for the past year, the proficiency made by the pupils, and the success attending the modes of instruction and government of the teachers:"

SULLIVAN DISTRICT .- CHARLES H. WORSTER, Agent.

HIGH SCHOOL .- At the commencement of the year, Mr. James D. Montgomery, teacher of the Grammar School, was promoted to take charge of the High School. It would be sufficent to say that the same excellent results have followed his efforts in his new position as made him so deservedly popular as teacher of the Grammar School. During the entire year the progress of the school has been admirable. Mr. Montgomery has been incessant in hard work to promote the welfare of his pupils, and an increas- ing efficiency of the school, and his work has been attended by success. The interest in the school on the part of the scholars has been remarkable. A great amount of useful instruction, re- gardless of the text books, has been given. At all visits made the recitations have been fine, and the teacher, in conducting them has spared no pains to make them interesting by pointing out the

38

practical bearing of the lessons, and by giving thorough ins truc- tion. And the year has been one of real success for this important school.

GRAMMAR SCHOOL .-- To fill the vacancy occasioned by the pro- motion of Mr. Montgomery to the High School, Mr. Mayland G. Gowen of this town, was selected. And the choice proved a fortu- nate one. Passing scholarly attainments of a high order, and that natural fitness requisite for the teacher's vocation, Mr. Gow- en assumed charge of this school, with a real anxiety to do his duty. The discipline of the school has been excellent, and its class exercises have been conducted with great care. The teacher has been zealous and faithful in giving instruction, and in the per- formance of all his duties has labored with a conscientious desire to make his services productive of good to those placed under his care. The interest of the pupils in the school has been sustained. The progress during the entire year has been uniformly marked by excellence. And the former high standing of this school has been fully kept up under the care of Mr. Gowen.

PRIMARY AND INTERMEDIATE SCHOOLS.

ROCHESTER STREET .- The Intermediate School has been con- tinued under the instruction of Miss Ida I. Hubbard, of this town, whose services the past year have been marked by the same devo- tion to her work as in the past. She is constant in her endeavors to seek new and interesting methods by which to instruct her pu- pils. The progress has been approved. The reading of the schol- ars was deemed exceeding good.

PRIMARY SCHOOL .- Miss Lella M. Clark, of this town, who taught this school the year previous, has been continued as teacher during the past year. In care for the small children composing her school, she has been judicious, and the school has continued to prosper. The progress has been satisfactory, in many cases ux- usual. Miss Clark is entitled to much praise for her faithful and patient services.

BERWICK STREET .- At the beginning of the Spring term, Miss Mary L. Chase of North Berwick, a teacher of experience took charge of this school, and during the time she continued in it gave every evidence of success. But at the end of a few weeks she re- signed by reason of sickness and death in her family. To' finish the Spring term, Mrs. Emma Blaisdell, of this town, an old and successful teacher, was engaged. She was industrious and en- thusiastic in performing her duties, and closed the term with suc- cess. All studies were well taught especially reading and spelling.

The Fall and Winter terms were taught by Miss M. Jennie Frost, of this town, who labored hard to do her duty. And the progress made was quite commendable.

Before the commencement of the Fall term Miss C. resigned on account of sickness, and Miss Annie M. Leach of this town, was selected for that and the Winter term. She conducted the school in a ,satis- factory manner. Good order and attention to studies were observed and the improvement made satisfactory.
