ANNUAL TOWN REPORT
COLLECTOR'S REPORT
To the Citizens of the Town of Columbia :
Having served you as collector of taxes for the past twelve years, it becomes part of my duty I owe to myself and the taxpayers, to take a small space in your annual report and thank you one and all for the courteous way you have all used, me, most especially the muni- cipal officers. I have received the best attention that could be given a collector. No doubt the taxes could be collected more promptly but my plan has been to collect without putting the town in debt by making it hard for some of our taxpayers, who are not as well situat- ed to pay as others, also it has appeared to me that in quite a few cases it is better to coax out a tax rather than drive it out.
I always try to do my work for the town so that when I meet one of the taxpayers, he or she cannot say I ever did them a wrong, or for the municipal officers to say I have caused the town a lot of ex- tra expense by forcing collections.
As long as the citizens of Columbia wish for me to collect their taxes, I will endeavor to try and please the majority of the people.
Respectfully,
HARRISON F. SMITH, Collector of Taxes.
Superintendent of Schools' Report
To the Superintending School Committee and Citizens of the town of Columbia :
I submit to you my third annual report of your schools as required by law.
I feel better satisfied with the condition of the schools than at any time since I have had the direction of the schools, but realize there is much chance for improvement.
I wish to thank the citizens of the town for their generosity in raising the amounts asked for at the annual meeting. While good schools depend to a large extent upon the quality of the teachers em- ployed, teachers can and will do better work in a room that is well equipped and made as pleasant as possible.
ATTENDANCE
The attendance this year has been very satisfactory but one pupil giving any trouble.
Beginning this year a new law for the distribution of school funds goes into effect. A part of the money received from the state will depend upon the aggregate attendance of all pupils.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
As required by law some attention has been given to physical edu -. cation. Each teacher has been supplied with a copy of Clark's Phy- sical Training and asked to give as much time as possible to the ex- ercises.
Miss Robinson, the county nurse, gave each child a physical exam- ination, three records of which were made, one being sent to the par- ents, one kept at the school for future reference and the other re- tained by the nurse. Parents are urged to have the defects noted cor- rected as far as possible to do so.

ANNUAL TOWN REPORT
HEALTH CRUSADE
During the fall term a health crusade was started in the lower grades and the pupils encouraged to take it. Eleven simple rules for good health were kept for a period of twenty weeks. I believe some good results were obtained. Material was furnished by the Maine Public Health Association at cost:
TEACHERS
Five of the six teachers who comprised the teaching force for last year have been retained. I believe they have all worked hard for the improvement of the schools. Unless a superintendent can secure the co-operation of the teaching force, it is difficult to accomplish much. Parents should help the teacher as far as possible. While a moderate amount of criticism may help a person the same amount of praise will do far more.
SCHOOL LIBRARIES
Some material for school libraries have been purchased this year and used to a good advantage in the schools. To get the pupils interested in the right kind of reading is very important. Every school is now equipped with a library of some kind and when the books have been read carefully, they can be exchanged with those of another school. The Epping school was fortunate enough to be supplied with a traveling library from the State Library at Augusta.
REPAIRS
€
A good woodshed and connected toilets conforming to the law were constructed at Epping and a very satisfactory job was done.
At Saco a new stove was purchased, some minor repairs made on the interior of the building, and some new blackboards put up.
The walls of both the Valley and Georgetown buildings have been painted, making the rooms much pleasanter.
All buildings are now equipped with flags with the poles and ropes in condition so that the flags may be raised in pleasant weather.

ANNUAL TOWN REPORT
NEEDED REPAIRS
Two buildings must be provided this year with connected toilets and woodsheds, one side of the Saco building must be shingled and the interior of the building should be painted.
A new stove is needed for the Branch school and the walls and ceiling should be painted.
CONCLUSION
Each year new demands are being made upon the schools. We are no longer satisfied with the teaching of the three R's but are begin- ning to realize that the training of the physical as well as mental side of the pupils is important.
The amount received from the State for common school will be in- creased under the new law about four or five hundred dollars. If the taxpayers feel that they can afford it I would recommend that the length of the school year be increased two or three weeks.
Respectfully submitted,
RAY ROBINSON, Superintendent of Schools.
