The town at the last annual meeting, voted to authorize the selectmen to buy a poor house or poor farm, having in view the keeping of a pair of horses to use with the road machine and hearse. To carry that vote into effect, we pur- chased the farm known as the True or Titcomb farm of Mrs. E. C. Bartol paying her $1400. We found the buildings, especially the barn, very much out of repair and have been obliged to expend about $500, on barn and out buildings: We were also obliged to build a house for the hearse that cost about $100.
There was also a new chimney built for the house and
19
some other necessary changes and repairs. The expenses for repairs were more than we expected when we commenced work, but we are of the opinion that the farm is worth all it has cost. We engaged Mr. Peter Stevens, wife and son to carry on the farm for one year for $400. We thought it nec- essary to have two men to work the road machine.
It will be impossible to tell by this year's experience, just how much advantage the farm will prove to be. It was late in the season when we commenced operations, and it required considerable time to get everything in working order, there- fore it will not be expected that the farming part will prove as profitable as it may in the future. We think we were very fortunate in securing the services of Mr. Stevens and wife, and cheerfully recommend them to the town for the positions they now occupy. In order to pay for the farm, we borrowed of B. F. Conant, $2,200.00, payable as follows: One note for $800, due Sept. 2d, 1886, one for $800, due Sept. 2d, 1887, and one for $600, due Sept. 2d, 1888, interest annually at 6 per cent. We also borrowed of S. A. Holbrook, $800, due Oct. 31, 1889, interest semi-annually at 5 per cent. You will see that our expenses for poor off the farm are very large. They were mostly for bills due before the farm was in running order. After the farm was started, there were several who had been supported right along by the town, who concluded that hereafter they could take care of themselves. The following persons are on the farm: Marcia Tenney, Caroline Armstrong, Relief Merriam and Augustus Gould. Thomas Merrill and Frederick Plummer were there for a short time. 143 tramps have been provided with two meals and lodging. Mr. Stevens has also attended 24 funerals with the hearse.
We have but one cow at the farm. We think one or two more could be kept to an advantage.
The vacancy in the office of town treasurer, caused by the death of John A. Briggs, we filled by appointing S. A. Hol- brook for the balance of the year. We deemed it advisable during the prevalence of the small pox in neighboring towns, to employ Drs. Spear and Twitchell, to vaccinate the town, paying them $25.00 each and $51.00 for the points. About 600 availed themselves of the privilege.
