" We, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another .. "
" And whether one member suffer, all the members suffer with it; or one member be honored, all the members rejoice with it. Now ye . are the body of Christ, and members in particular."
-
Cobenant.
-
CONFESSING that you are a sinful, guilty creature, that you have forsaken God your Maker, and lived under the influence of that carnal mind, which is enmity against Him and His laws-and henceforth renouncing the de- structive ways of sin, and disclaiming all dependence on yourself, you do now, in the presence of GOD and men, solemnly choose and take the LORD JEHOVAH to be your God and Father-His co-equal and co-eternal Son, the LORD JESUS CHRIST, to be your only Savior-the HOLY SPIRIT to be your sanctifier, guide and comforter ; and the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments to be the rule of your faith and practice.
In the same public and solemn manner you dedicate yourself to GoD in the bonds of his everlasting covenant, unreservedly surrendering all that you have and are to His sovereign disposal-engaging, by his assistance, to live henceforth to Him and not to yourself ; and to aim, whatever you do, to do all to His glory.
In humble dependence on Divine Grace, you bind yourself to a faithful and persevering performance of the various duties which you owe to GoD,to your fellow- creatures and to yourself-to bring up all committed to your care in the nurture and admonition of the LORD

COVENANT.
and to use your influence, in every relation in life, to promote the cause and interest of the ever blessed REDEEMER.
.
You also covenant and engage that you will diligently attend on all christian ordinances, and hold communion in them with this Church-especially in the ordinances of Baptism and the LORD's Supper ; that you will watch over your Brethren in love, faithfully reproving them when they go astray ; and that you will submit to the discipline of CHRIST in His house, and to the regular administration of it in this Church-in all things seeking its peace and welfare, so long as God shall continue you here.
This you profess, and bind yourself by the promised assistance of your great Covenant Head to perform.
(The ordinance of Baptism, when requisite, is here adminis- tered, after which the members of the Church rise.)
I then, in the presence of GOD and these witnesses, and in the name of the LORD JESUS CHRIST, pronounce you a member of this branch of his visible Church ;' and we covenant and engage to treat you as such ; to watch over you in love-and should you at any time be over- taken in a fault, to restore you in a spirit of meekness, remembering ourselves, lest we also be tempted.
Brief Summary of Christian Doctrines,
DRAWN FROM THE BIBLE.
We believe that there is one God, the Father, Son and Holy Ghost ; (1) infinite in his perfections, and un- changeable in his purposes ; (2) the Creator, Preserver and Governor of the Universe ; who made all things for himself, and governs them all according to his holy will ; (3) that the Scriptures of the Old and New Testa- ments, given by inspiration of God, constitute our only perfect rule of faith and practice ;(4) that man was created holy, but became sinful by disobedience to God in eating the forbidden fruit; (5) that all mankind in ·consequence of the fall, are by nature sinners, destitute

HI. RIGHTS OF THE CHURCH.
This Church claims the right of self-government, and holds itself amenable to no other ecclesiastical body, except by its own consent, in accordance with the estab- lished usage of Congregational churches.
II. OFFICERS.
The permanent officers of this Church, shall be a Pastor or Pastors, and Deacons, who shall be chosen by its members, to perform the duties usually appertaining to their offices. The Pastor shall be considered ex- officio, a member of the Church. There shall also be a Scribe, Treasurer, and standing Committee, to be chosen at the annual meeting on Monday preceding the first Sabbath in January.
III. ADMISSION OF MEMBERS li
Every candidate for admission to this Church, will be expected to give satisfactory evidence of personal piety, and assent to its faith and covenant. Candidates, after
9
GOVERNMENT OF THE CHURCH.
having been examined in such way as the Church may appoint, shall be publicly propounded, except in extraor- dinary cases, two weeks before being received to com- munion, and the question of admission shall be taken by vote at a regular business meeting of the Church.
Every applicant for admission to this Church will be required strictly to abstain from the use and traffic in ardent spirits, except for purposes connected with medi- cine or the arts.
IV. CONNECTION WITH OTHER CHURCHES.
This Church will, in ordinary cases, abide by the decisions of mutual Councils, and extend to other Churches the usual reciprocities of fellowship, advice and transfer of members. It will grant recommenda- tions and dismissions, according to Congregational usages ; but requires its members, on removing from this city, either to transfer their Church relation within one year, or to assign the reasons of the further delay ; and it will admit members of other churches, resident among us, to occasional communion not longer than one year, without satisfactory reasons given for delaying to transfer their relation, and a certificate of their good standing. It will also give recommendations and dismis- sions to any evangelical Church, if requested in a prop- er spirit and manner ; but all other ways of withdraw- ing from its communion and care, will be deemed irreg- ular and censurable.
10
GOVERNMENT OF THE CHURCH.
{ V. SEASONS OF COMMUNION.
The Lord's Supper, preceded by a preparatory Lec- ture, or some other appropriate service, shall be cele- brated on the first Sabbath of every month.
VI. CENSURABLE OFFENCES.
Any immoral conduct, breach of covenant, neglect of religious or relative duties, or denial of any fundamental doctrines held by this Church, and professed by its mem- bers at the time of their admission.
VII. EVIDENCE.
The confession of the accused, the concurrence of two credible witnesses, or circumstantial evidence to the same amount, shall be requisite for conviction.
VIII. CENSURES.
Those, consisting of admonition, suspension or ex- communication, are in each case to be administered by special vote of the Church, on the principle of making the reparation co-extensive with the injury done by the offender.
IX. PROCESS OF DISCIPLINE.
Offences strictly personal and private, should be immediately settled, according to the direction of our Savior in the 18th chapter of Matthew ; but for public
11
GOVERNMENT OF THE CHURCH.
and notorious offenses, members may, without any pre- vious admonition in private, be disciplined in such way as the Church shall think proper. In all cases, however, the following rules are to be observed.
1. No individual shall bring an accusation before the Church, without having given the accused previous no- tice, and an opportunity to satisfy his brethren, without any further steps of discipline.
2. No member shall, without his consent, be tried, during the same meeting, at which charges are preferred against him.
3. The accused shall be furnished with a copy of the charges against him, and be entitled to a fair investiga- tion and defence.
4. The accuser, others personally implicated, and any member who may have expressed a previous opinion on a case pending before the Church, shall be excluded from voting in such cases.
5. It will be deemed censurable for one member to report disciplinable offences of another, without having previously taken the steps prescribed by the gospel, to reclaim him.
X. MEETINGS.
The regular meetings of the Church shall be,
1. A meeting for devotional exercises on some evening of each week, except in special cases.
· 2. A meeting for business on Monday evening preced- ing the first Sabbath in each month, or, when the monthly Concert comes on that evening, at the close of the devo tional meeting next preceding or following.
12
GOVERNMENT OF THE CHURCH.
3. A season of Fasting, Humiliation and Prayer, during the week preceding the first Sabbath in March, June, September and December.
XI. RELIGIOUS CHARITIES.
The Church, regarding it as one important part of Christian duty to aid in sending the Gospel through the world, has resolved itself informally into a Missionary Society. In addition to the contribution at the Monthly Concert, and at each communion season, (the latter ap- plied, after defraying necessary expenses, and providing for the wants of the poorer members, either to the assist- ance of feeble Churches, or to the education of young men for the ministry,) there are distinct subscriptions, or collections annually for the principal religious charities of the day.
It is intended that each member of the Church, and, so far as practicable, of the congregation, shall have a fair opportunity to add his or her contribution, be it little or much, to the funds of Christian charity.
We desire ever to remember those words of our Lord. " Freely ye have received, freely give," -- and while yet " the whole world lieth in wickedness," to aid in the great and good work of evangelizing and saving it.
