PREFACE.
-
IN accordance with our usual custom of publishing the Direc- tory of Augusta, Hallowell and Gardiner, we now present No. 6 of the regular series, believing its fullness and correctness will . fully sustain, if not surpass, its former reputation. Of its welcome reception by our former patrons and the general public we have the fullest confidence.
The combined social, commercial and manufacturing advantages which have accrued to the three cities here represented, on ac- count of their proximity to each other and to one of the finest water powers in the State, joined to the important navigation facilities afforded by the mingling of the Kennebec river with tide water, from the base of its fall to its widening mouth, have so in- creased business and population as to call for a new directory quite as often as we have furnished it. As cities increase in size and importance the directory becomes more and more valuable and indispensable as a book of reference, not only to its citizens, but to strangers and visitors who have constant occasion to con- sult its pages for information of one kind or another.
The fire which occurred during the canvass and which at one time threatened the total destruction of the city, had the aspect of a serious blow to the business community and our patronage, this we are pleased to state has been fully met by our patrons, as will be seen by their numerous cards in the book.
There were six or eight mills and shops, between thirty and forty-five houses and one bridge destroyed, beside eighty families made homeless, the loss was estimated at from $200,000 to $300,- 000. Insurance about $100,000.
Orders for our directories come to us from distant parts of the country, showing that our circulation is not limited to the cities they represent.
Persons using the directory will find it greatly to their advan- tage to know the precise spelling of a name before looking for it, as names pronounced the same but spelled in various ways will be found to appear on different pages at quite a distance from each other.
The present directory shows the following increase of names since the previous issue :
