MAINE VOLUNTEERS.
SECOND LIEUTENANT JOIIN S. FRENCH.
Lieutenant FRENCH was one of the original mem- bers of Company E., entering the service as a private. After the lapse of some four months, he was promoted to be a sergeant, and upon the thirteenth of June, 1863, he was commissioned as second lieutenant in Company B.
On the seventh of November, 1863, at the charge at Rappahannock Station he was struck down, mortally wounded, by a bullet. Some of his men sought to minister to him; bat, raising himself up, he urged them on, not to stop for him. His noble spirit exhib- itell its power and earnestness to the last. He lived but a few moments after being wounded.
Lientenant French combined the qualities of a gen- tleman and a soldier. With his comrades he was popular, and by them beloved. Brave upon every field, conscientious, upright, he was constantly winning favor upon all sides. His name shines brightly among those who were offered in sacrifice upon the altar of a bleeding country. Evergreen must be his memory in the hearts of those to whom he was near and dear.
