GRAVESTONE INSCRIPTIONS SEDGWICK, MAINE Prior to A. D. 1875

Compiled by Grace Limeburner North Brooksville, Maine 1943

Inquiries regarding those who sleep in the old unmarked graves have brought me very little information. As far as the younger generation is concerned, these are indeed forgotten . places.

I have been somewhat more fortunate in my quest for informa- tion regarding the families of those whose names I have recorded.

I do not vouch for the accuracy of these statements; neither did my informants. I can only say that the neighbors say that:

Most of these old Sedgwick families came from Massachusetts. The Allens from Andover and Salem. Jonathan Allen, son of Nehamiah is said to have been one of the first white children born in Sedg- wick. He married Lois Morgan. They became the parents of twelve children. One of them, Nathaniel, born June 29, 1797 at North Sedgwick, was the first Postmaster in the town. His wife was Ruth R., daughter of Samuel Herrick. £ The Herrick family came from Beverly, Mass. Joshua Herrick and his wife Huldah.

From Winham came the Coles and from Gloucester, the Sargents, Lufkins, Haskells and Curriers. Susanna, a daughter of Witham Currier, married, before 1780, Solomon Haskell. £ The Haskells came first to Deer Isle and later to Sedgwick.

here from Haverhill and a sister, Abigail Eaton, married Richard Currier.

The Grindles -- Joshua, Daniel, William and John -- came here from Berwick. Daniel settled in West Sedgwick and it is his descendents who are buried here. (See Camp Stream Cemetery) Probably Daniel and Sarah Gray, his wife, are buried in one of the unmarked graves.
