BERRIEN COUNTY SOME FACTS AND FIGURES
B
ERRIEN COUNTY, with a total of 5,252 farms in an area of 569 square miles, is distinctly a farm county. More than 91 per cent of the entire area of the county is in its farms, and more than 80 per cent is under cultivation. The farms are, as a rule, of more than average size, about 6 per cent being under ten acres. They are almost, without exception, profitable and correspondingly valuable. The farmers, as a class, are the most prosperous folks in the county. In view of the number of farms, that is in itself a statement of the wealth of this section.
The farm population of Berrien County is almost exclusively native- born white.
It is interesting to note the number of farms in the county operated by their owners. Of this class there are 4,294, or 81 per cent. Two thousand three hundred, or 53 per cent, of them are reported free of morigage debt. This is an exceptionally large percentage. Of the bal- ance, the remarkably low mortgage indebtedness of only 28 per cent of the entire valuation is carried. Even in the absence of other statistical

figures, these mortgage statements alone would indicate exceptional pros- perity among Berrien County farmers.
The largest single crop, and the one produced most generally through- out the entire county, is corn, of which 1,520,608 bushels were produced in 1910, a notably bad crop year, but the latest for which authoritative figures are available. Following closely on this for quantity is potatoes, with a total of 681,098 bushels ; wheat comes next, with 551,312 bushels, and oats fourth, with 546,030 bushels. The combined total of value of these four crops was in excess of two and one-half million dollars.
Everywhere is an atmosphere of hard work. Everyone takes work seriously and as a matter of course. There is no false pride about it, and no failure to realize its importance and its necessity. Rich farmers' wives and sons and daughters take pride in their fine butter, their eggs, their vegetables, their chickens and their stock. The relations between the people of the farms and the people of the county seat are most cordial. The farmers deposit their savings in the local banks, and deal in the local stores.
This directory is published in the belief that it will serve to acquaint the residents of one end of the county with those of the other. We believe it to be accurate. We realize, however, that even in the most carefully compiled and printed books certain errors are bound to appear, and we apologize in advance for any such that may be found by our subscribers.

BERRIEN COUNTY
ABSTRACT OF TITLES BERRIEN COUNTY ABSTRACT CO. SAINT JOSEPH, MICHIGAN T. L. WILKINSON, Manager ABSTRACTS THAT TALK
Describes the kind prepared by this Com- pany. Not a mere index to the record but a history of the title.
The best is not too good and costs no more, the cost here being about one tenth of the price charged for same work in the big cities. Forty years on the job and satisfied customers in every section of the county.
Why require an abstract of title to the farm or city or village lot when buying or loaning money?
To show that the person who sells or mortgages to you has a legal right to do so, that the descriptions in all the deeds are cor- rect and convey good title, that there are no outstanding liens, that the taxes are not re-
turned and that you will have a good title to the land you pay for.
An Abstract shows whether the title is good or bad, the cost is a trifle, the service very prompt.
Our Abstract Indexes are posted every day up to date and we furnish on short notice Ab- stracts or any information desired about titles anywhere in the County.
We make loans on real estate at lowest going rate, and buy and sell mortgages.
Surety Bonds issued, and deeds, mortgages and other legal papers drawn and compared with the records to insure correct names and descriptions.
