Representative from Midland county, was born in New York state in 1849, of Scotch and Irish ancestors. He was educated in the common schools. He has been engaged in lumbering, manufacturing of lumber and shingles and farming. He has held the offices of supervisor and sheriff. He is married. Mr. Thorington is a democrat and was elected to the legislature of 1903-4 by a vote of 1,271 to 1,084 for Charles H. Bergtold.
HENRY B. VANDERCOOK,
Representative from the first district of Kent county, was born at Ann Arbor, Michigan, August 3, 1861. and received his education in the schools at Allegan. In 1876 he engaged in the monumental business and probably has the distinction of being the youngest business man in Michigan at that time, as he was not quite fifteen years of age. He has successfully pursued the same business since and in 1891 removed to Grand Rapids and established the Grand Rapids Monument Company of which he is president and half owner. By home study and a membership in the Kent Law Club he was admitted to practice by Judge Adsit in 1895. Mr. Vandercook was a volunteer fireman for nine years. He is married and is a member of several societies. He is an ardent republican and was elected to the legis- lature of 1901-2 and re-elected November 4, 1902, on the general legislative ticket of Grand Rapids by a vote of 6,906 to 4,388 for Fred C. Temple, the candidate on the democratic ticket receiving the greatest number of votes.
JACOB J. VAN ZOEREN,
Representative from the first district of Kent county, was born in Vries- land, Michigan, May 3, 1855, and lived on his father's farm until twenty- four years of age. His education was obtained in the district schools. After farming successfully two years he removed to western Kansas and engaged in stock raising and mercantile business. Returning to Michigan in 1889, he located in Grand Rapids, where he has since been successfully engaged in the mercantile business. Mr. Van Zoeren was married in 1879. THEODOSIUS WADE,
Representative from the second district of Allegan county, was born in Ganges township, Allegan county, Michigan, November 14, 1858. His educa- tion was obtained in the common schools and Douglas high school. He taught school two years, reading law in the meantime, until he entered the University of Michigan, from which he graduated in 1888. After spend- ing some time in travel, he opened a law office in Fennville, holding con- tinuously the office of village counsel. Mr. Wade is married, and in partnership with his brother. He is an extensive fruit grower and shipper. He was formerly a democrat, but is now a republican, and was elected to the legislature of 1901-2, and re-elected November 4, 1902, by a vote of 1,609 to 594 for Fred H. Carpenter.
EDWARD A. WALKER,
Representative from the first district of Genesee county, was born in Lee, Calhoun county, Michigan, October 20, 1860. His education was obtained in the district school, and at the age of seventeen he went to Muskegon where he worked in a mill and later engaged in the lumber trade. Mr. Walker was married in 1883 and removed to Genesee county in 1887, where he has since been a successful farmer, contractor and builder. In politics he is a strong republican and was elected to the legislature of 1901-2 and re-elected November 4, 1902, by a vote of 2,521 to 1,579 for Richard H. Wood.
ROBERT C. WALLACE,
Representative from Newaygo county, was born at Toronto, Canada, April 11, 1844, of Scotch and Irish parents. He obtained his education in the Canadian schools. He came to Michigan in 1864, and has been engaged since that time in lumbering and farming. He was married July 16, 1876. Mr. Wallace is a republican, and was elected to the legislature of 1903-4 by a vote of 1,813 to 1,067 for James E. Sharp.
CHARLES E. WARD,
Representative from Shiawassee county, was born at Du Quoin, Illinois, in 1873, of English and French ancestors. He graduated from the Du Quoin high school in 1891, and the law department of the University of Michigan in 1894. He has been employed as bookkeeper, practiced law and is now cashier of the Exchange Bank of Bancroft. He was married in

1895 to Mary L. Sherman. Mr. Ward is a republican, and was elected `to the legislature of 1903-4 by a vote of 3,669 to 3,137 for Albert L. Chandler, and 332 for D. M. Christian.
NEWTON O. WARD,
Representative from Mecosta county, was born in Sheffield, Ontario, November 8, 1854, coming to Michigan in 1862. His education was received in the public schools. At the age of fifteen he was thrown upon his own resources by the sudden death of his father, and began teaching school, which profession he followed six years, after which he entered the hard- ware business in which he has since been successfully engaged. Mr. Ward was married in 1876. He has held the offices of superintendent of schools, township clerk, supervisor, census enumerator and was postmaster under President Mckinley. In politics he is a strong republican, and was elected to the legislature of 1901, and re-elected November 4, 1902, by a vote of 1,634 to 669 for Andrew Breakey.
JOHN WASHER,
Representative from the second district of Bay county, was born in Eng- land in 1855, and is of English descent. He was educated in the common schools of England. He came to Michigan in 1872, settled in Bay county where he has since resided, following the occupation of farming. Mr. Washer is married. He has been supervisor of Bangor township thirteen years and at present is chairman of the county board of supervisors. Mr. Washer is a republican and was elected to the legislature of 1903-4 by a vote of 2,060 to 1,780 for William Gaffney, 81 for Simon D. Mclaughlin and 48 for Joseph Boustead.
THOMAS M. WELLS,
Representative from the first district of Marquette county, was born in Connecticut in 1848, descending from New England ancestors. He was educated in Salisbury Academy, Connecticut. Worked on a farm, in a woolen mill and after coming west, clerked in the large store of the Iron Cliff Company at Negaunee. In 1886 he purchased the extensive mercantile department of the Iron Cliff company and continued in the business fifteen years. He was deputy revenue collector during President Harrison's administration. During the year of 1902, Mr. Wells was employed in work connected with the State Tax Commission. He was married in 1884. He is a republican and was elected to the legislature of 1903-4 by a vote of 1,305 to 416 for George A. Genell.

GIDEON T. WERLINE,
Representative from Menominee county, was born in Tioga county, Pennsyl- vania, in 1851, of German parents. He was educated in the common schools of Pennsylvania. Taught school for two years, and has lived in Michigan twelve years, during which time he has been engaged in mercan- tile, farming and real estate business. He is married and is a democrat in politics. He was elected to the legislature of 1903-4 by a vote of 1,419 to 1,406 for William F. Waite.
NICHOLAS J. WHELAN,
Representative from the first district of Ottawa county, was born near Montague, Michigan, in 1869, of Irish-American parents. He worked in saw mills, as section hand on the railroad, in basket factories and taught school. At twenty-one years of age he was elected justice of the peace in Montague and at the age of twenty-two joined the life saving crew at Holland, Michigan, and served for five years. He was admitted to the practice of law in 1895. Three years ago he purchased an interest in the Holland City News and became editor of that paper. Mr. Whelan is a republican in politics, and was elected to the legislature of 1903-4 by a vote of 1,853 to 1,347 for W. O. Van Eyck, 57 for John C. Lehman and 37 for Albert Le Roi Heath.
BYRON C. WHITAKER,
Representative from the first district of Washtenaw county, was born in Yates county, New York, May 30, 1835, and came to Michigan when very young. His education was obtained in the common schools and union school at Ypsilanti. He was a successful farmer forty years and was also engaged in the lumber and hardware business ten years. Mr. Whitaker is unmarried. He is a democrat and has held the offices of supervisor, justice of the peace and township treasurer. He was elected to the legis- lature of 1901-2 and re-elected November 4, 1902, by a vote of 2,177 to 2,008 for John W. Haarer and 75 for Loren D. Carr.
MARK WILLIS,
Representative from Sanilac county, was born in 1832, in Somerset, Eng- land, where his early education was obtained. In 1846 he emigrated to Canada, where he remained nine years, coming to Lexington, Sanilac county, in 1855. Mr. Willis is married, and has been a successful farmer forty years of his life, ten of which he has also been engaged in the lumber business. Mr. Willis has always been a strong republican and has held

the office of highway commissioner, and was school director ten years. He was elected to the legislature of 1901-2, and re-elected November 4, 1902, by a vote of 2,196 to 1,022 for Mathew C. Kerr.
HENRY D. WRIGHT,
Representative from Isabella county, was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, October 15, 1857, and obtained his education in the common schools of that city. In 1882 he settled in Broomfield township, Isabella county, and engaged in farming and lumbering. Mr. Wright is married, and has held the offices of highway commissioner. township clerk, supervisor and treas- urer. He is a strong republican, and was elected to the legislature of 1901-2 and re-elected November 4, 1902, by a vote of 2,062 to 1,636 for Allen Keune.
