The society was organized under an act of the legislature passed in 1873. but was the successor to the Historical Society of Michigan, begun by Lewis Cass and others in 1525
Annual meetings are held in the state capitol at Lansing, the first Wednesday and Thursday in June, and mid-winter meetings are held in different places throughout the state by special invitation.
One volume of historical matter is published each year and there are now 39 vilup- printed, to be obtained of the secretary for one dollar per volume. Postage on each volume, twenty-eight cents. Two volumes of index have been printed, Vol. I. coverine Vols. 1-15; Vol. II, Vols. 16-30, and are disposed of the same as the collection
The society has rooms and a small museum in the capitol building, and received all ap- propriation from the state. The amount appropriated for 1910 and 1911 was $1 KWI per year .- Act No. 116, P. A. 1909.
