The formation of the above society was one phase of Michigan's activity towards the Centennial year of 1876. It was organized under Act No. 156, laws of Michigan of 1873, and in a sense may be regarded as a revival of the earlier Historical Society of Michigan of which Lewis Cass was the first president. It was organized as a private corporation on April 22, 1874; life membership fee, $1. Important state support has from time to time been given. The annual meeting of the society is held at the capitol at Lansing, the first Wednesday and Thursday in June; mid-winter meetings are de- termined by invitation from Michigan cities. Headquarters are in the capitol building, Lansing. The most vital activities of the society are those related to the local Pioneer and Historical Societies of the state. Property recently transferred by the society to the newly created Michigan Historical Commission includes the museum and all publications. The former contains valuable materials illustrative of the early social and economic history of Michigan; the publications consist of 38 volumes of pioneer and historical collections containing many valuable printed manuscripts, both original and transcribed, bearing on the history of Michigan.
