GROWTH OF WEALTH AND POPULATION.
The first assessment made in Saint Paul, in 1849, gave a valuation of $85,000. In 1853, this had risen to $723,534; and, in 1854, almost doubled, being $1,300,000. In 1856, it rose to $3,287,220, which, in one year more, (1857,) had increased nearly 100 per cent., being $6,437,285. This valuation of the " flush times" shrank, with everything else, and, in 1860, had declined $1,691,176. From this on, the following table gives the quinquennial increase :
