HISTORY OF OLMSTED COUNTY

dered transferred to Charleston, jumped the train, but was re- captured and taken to Salisbury, where he died. John Cassidy, of Marion, taken to Andersonville, where he died. George H. Knapp, of Stewartville, taken to Andersonville, where he died. William F. Lyon, of Stewartville, sent to Andersonville. He was discharged with the regiment. John L. Craig, of Stewartville, sent to Ca- tawba. He was discharged with the regiment. George Atkinson, of Oronoco, taken to Andersonville and died there. Samuel Chil- son, of High Forest, was captured, but there is no record of his im- prisonment, and he was discharged with the regiment.

George C. Sherman, James Reynolds and F. Wilbur Warner had an adventurous escape from capture after the battle. They had only five hardtack for provisions. They hid by day and trav- eled by night and lived on such forage as green apples. They reached Memphis after six days of such toilsome travel and re- joined the regiment. Sherman is now a resident of Osage, Iowa.

Capt. Absalom M. Enoch was from Illinois. He was keeping a saloon in Rochester and recruited a number of volunteers for the company. After his retirement from the army he was a farmer in Haverhill, and from there moved to Dakota.

Capt. Milton J. Daniels was a son of Hon. J. V. Daniels. He was born in the State of New York. He came to Rochester in 1857 and in 1860 went to Middlebury, New York, and attended the academy there, returning to Rochester. He became captain of Company F. In 1865 he was commissioned as captain and com- missary and was on the staff of General Canby at New Orleans. His health was impaired by the hardships of the Guntown cam- paign. He returned to Rochester at the close of the war, became cashier and the president of the Union National Bank. He served as a representative in the Legislature two terms and one term as State senator. In 1891 he removed to California, where he was a banker and was elected a representative in Congress. He is still living there. He was an active and successful business man and popular with the people.

Lieut. Alfred M. Hall enlisted from Farmington township, where he was a farmer. He returned to Farmington after the war and followed the occupation of farming for several years, after which he engaged in the grocery business in Rochester and from there moved to Dakota. He is now a resident of Brookings.

Lieut. Alexander J. McMillan was a farmer in Farmington town- ship. He located in Rochester at the close of his service and after- wards moved to St. Paul, where he went on the police force, and from there moved to Chicago, where he was engaged in the same service.

Company I of the First Regiment of Mounted Rangers was or- ganized in 1862 and partly enlisted from Olmsted county. Dwight W. Allen was captain and J. Franklin Van Dooser first lieutenant.

HISTORY OF OLMSTED COUNTY

Captain Allen was from Oronoco and lived there after his term of service, his death occurring a few years later.

J. Franklin Van Dooser came to Rochester in 1858 and returned there after his service and was engaged several years in the hard- ware business. He was prominent socially and enterprising. He removed to Ashland, Wisconsin, where he is a prosperous real estate dealer.

Companies F, G, H and I of the First Battalion were recruited in the spring of 1865 and included a number of volunteers from Olmsted county, some of them veterans who re-enlisted. Lafayette Hadley, of Olmsted county, was captain of Company F; John A. Wallingford, of Olmsted county, captain, and Jacob Z. Barncard, of Olmsted county, first lieutenant of Company I. The battalion was sent South, but the war was ended before it was called upon for any but march and camp duty. O. F. Chambers, of Rochester, and Simon Hadley, of Farmington, died at Louisville, Kentucky.

Captain Lafayette Hadley had served as sergeant of Company B of the Second Regiment and was promoted to lieutenant. He was a farmer near Chester for several years after his return from the war, after which he removed to Fargo, North Dakota.

Captain John N. Wallingford had been promoted to second lieu- tenant of Company H of the Second Regiment. After his service he returned to Olmsted county, and lived on a farm in Farmington township, went into merchandising in Rochester, was deputy sheriff, and moved to the State of Washington.

Lieut. Jacob Z. Barncard came to Cascade township while a boy with his parents and was reared on a farm adjoining the city of Rochester. He served three years in Company B of the Second Regiment before joining the battalion. After the war he moved to Owatonna, where he was sheriff several terms. He is now the State officer in charge of paroled prisoners. He is a most efficient officer and has a high reputation.

Don A. Daniels was senior second lieutenant in the Third Minne- sota Battery, whose service was in the war with the Sioux. He was a son of Hon. J. V. Daniels, of Rochester, and, after the war, re- turned to that city and was several years a furniture dealer and an active business man. He removed to Minneapolis, where he died in January, 1898.

Joseph H. Porter, a native of Ohio, came to Marion in 1858 from Indiana. He was a second lieutenant in Brackett's Battalion and served three years. He was a farmer and died in July, 1892, from falling off a ladder while hiving bees.

In January, 1862, a cavalry company, of which Judge Olds was captain; W. H. Mitchell, first lieutenant, and J. F. Van Dooser, second lieutenant, and about fifty privates, left Rochester to defend the frontier. They saw but little service and were not regularly organized.

HISTORY OF OLMSTED COUNTY

Enlistments in the State and county had been more ready than could have been expected, and Minnesota's quota of volunteers was rapidly filled, but conditions throughout the nation led the national government to arrange for conscription in 1862. In Minnesota the enlistments were somewhat checked by the outbreak of the Sioux massacre. The raids of the savages did not reach as far east as this county, but for several months there was an apprehension that they might get this far, and at one time there was a readily believed rumor that hostile Indians had been seen in the vicinity of High Forest. It proved to be only a scare.

In August, 1863, about daylight, several teams from Rock Dell were driven into Rochester with the families and a few household goods of Norwegian settlers alarmed by reports of Indian massa- cres in their neighborhood, which were entirely imaginary. It was said that the scare originated from a single Indian dressed in civil- ized clothing applying at a house in Mason county for food, which was given him, and he passed on.

The State was divided by the War Department into two enlist- ment districts, the first district including Olmsted county, and Rochester was made the recruiting station, with Capt. Charles H. See, of Caledonia, as provost marshal, and Dr. William W. Mayo, of Le Sueur, as examining surgeon. The office did a large business for several months in examining those who claimed exemption from military service by physical disability. Less than a third of such applicants were exempted from the draft. There was no actual conscription of recruits in Olmsted county, though drafts were ordered at least twice, and the names were drawn for con- scription, but the victims were never called upon for service.

The draft for conscripts took place at the provost marshal's office at Rochester, March 14, 1864. The names of persons subject to the draft were placed in a box, shaken up and drawn, one by one, by J. E. Ells, and announced by C. C. Cole, deputy marshal. The names of nine able-bodied men were drawn from Dover; nine from Elmira, among them Milo White; seven from Eyota; four from Orion; seven from Quincy, among them George Kepner; three from Viola; five from Cascade; nine from Farmington; seven from Kalmar, among them Peter H. Perry and W. W. Doty; four from New Haven, among them Charles Nye; seven from Oronoco, among them William E. Buttle, Abraham Pierce, John Atkinson and S. R. Terwilliger; five from Zumbro [now Haverhill], among them John A. Barker; thirteen from High Forest, among them John Engle, J. L. Rockwell, Eugene Wooldridge and William F. Toogood; seven from Marion, among them William Pierson; twelve from Pleasant Grove; five from Rock Dell; seven from Salem, and twenty-three from Rochester city, among them George Baihly, I. P. Brewer, Charles C. Jones, A. M. Blakely, Pat Woods, George W. Graves, Otto N. Cook, John C. Enke, John H. Hyatt,

HISTORY OF OLMSTED COUNTY

Charles H. Hitchcock, Moses Tyler, E. Damon and Browning Nichols.

When the name of George Baihly, the well-known Rochester butcher, was announced he took his fate and prospective hardship with the greatest good nature, got a box of cigars and passed them around in the assembled crowd.

There is no reason to believe that the county would have fallen short of the quota of enlistments required of it, but the possibility of a draft led to the offering of bounties by communities, and sev- eral of the townships bonded themselves, some very heavily, to borrow money to pay bounties to volunteers. One result of the bounty system was that volunteers, naturally wanting what bounty they could get, would have themselves credited to some other town- ship than their own for the sake of higher bounty; so that the rosters are inaccurate in showing to what township volunteers be- longed.

THE ROLL OF HONOR.
