UNIONLABE

Columbia, Missouri

Columbia, Mo., known as the "Athens of Missouri," is the metrop- olis and leading city in Boone County.

Surrounded as it is by a rich agricultural country, it is the principal trading point and draws a large trade from the farming community for miles in all directions.

Columbia is the county seat of Boone County and is state widely and nationally famous for its great schools, namely, the University of Missouri, Christian and Stephens Colleges for girls, all leading institutions of their kind, and a public school system embracing a high school and six ward schools in charge of a very efficient staff of teachers.

Columbia has numerous first class public and office buildings, churches of nearly all denominations are to be found here, occupying beautiful and substantial edifices.

Columbia has miles of good paved streets, an efficient fire and police department, a city water and light plant under municipal control, one of the largest shoe factories in the state, one of the best equipped printing es- tablishments in the state, two railroads, two daily and a number of weekly and monthly papers, and several good theatres. Its financial affairs are taken care of by six banks, all enjoying good business. It is a clean city, literally and morally ; its business men operate their places of business along up-to-date lines and carry stocks of goods to supply all demands. We can unreservedly recommend Columbia as a desirable place to live, do business or bring up a family in.
