HISTORICAL SKETCH OF INDEPENDENCE LODGE
No. 76, A. F. & A. M. 1846 - 1946
Rt. Wor. Brother N. D. Jackson, D. D. G. M.
THE HIGH SPOTS OF A CENTURY
Independence Lodge No. 76, A. F. and A. M. came into being during a decisive year in the history of the United States. History was made during 1846, and Independence being the gateway to the West, many of the great events affecting our future passed through this small frontier town of about one thousand people.
The outbreak of the Mexican War, and the vanguard of Doniphan's Expe- dition marched from Independence. The great California and Oregon migra- tions were passing through our gates. These momentous events culminated in the conquest of New Mexico and California and settlement of the Oregon question with Great Britain. All of this brought about the opening of the en- tire West for settlement and the modern map of the United States completed.
During this and previous years, while Independence was being carved from the wilderness many thousands passed through on their way to the great West. Of this mighty throng many were Masons, some of which settled and made this their home.
These sturdy pioneers first organized in 1841 and secured a charter for a Masonic Lodge. This Lodge had a short life and the charter was surrendered in 1844. Zealous Masons immediately started a reorganization under the leadership of Richard R. Rees, which culminated in the Grand Lodge of Mis- souri issuing a charter on October 14th, 1846 for Independence Lodge No. 76, A. F. & A. M. with Richard R. Rees as the first Worshipful Master. W. Bro. Rees later became the first Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Kansas.
During the years leading up to the Civil War Independence continued to be the principal outfitting point for emigrants, traders, explorers and ad- venturous to Santa Fe, California and Oregon, covering the great expanse of territory from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. The character of the people who built up Independence and the west was well stated by Emerson Hough, author of the Covered Wagon, when he said "The Cowards never started. The weak died on the way. That is how the real America was made."
10
.
It is not possible to mention by name, in a short space, the many members who during that period, were active not only in the Lodge, but also in the com- mercial, civic and political activities of the community. The great trade to the West was principally conducted by Masons. The first railway west of the Mississippi River, a link in a transcontinental transportation line connecting the river traffic with the overland trails to the West, including the mail and stage coach lines, under government contract, were organized and operated to Santa Fe and Salt Lake City by members of Independence Lodge.
During this period the Lodge met regularly, conducted degree work and maintained a membership averaging about forty, although many could not withstand the lure of the western movement and the fabulous stories from those who had gone before. The Lodge returns have the notation after names: "Gone to California," "Gone to Oregon." These pioneers carried Masonry with them. The first Masonic Lodge on the Pacific coast, Multonomah Lodge No. 84, Oregon City, Oregon, was granted a charter by Missouri in 1846, al- though it was two years in reaching its destination.
During the Civil War and the reconstruction years following, Masonry in Independence was at a low ebb.
Only through the untiring devotion of a few, and the leniency of the Grand Lodge in the matter of Grand Lodge dues, were the faithful able to retain their charter.
It is remarkable that during the war period regardless of the stress of the times, the Lodge met regularly and only once referred to the terrible events through which they were passing. The record states on one occasion that "No meeting was held as Independence was occupied by two hostile armies."
Following the years of civil strife, reconstruction, and financial panics, the Lodge took on new life and began to grow along with the community. Its leaders have been outstanding and have ever striven to maintain the high plane of manhood for which the Masonic fraternity stands, brotherly love, re- lief and truth. Its membership has supported the community and the nation in making this a better world in which to live.
Its members have carried Masonry to the far corners of the world, during the Spanish-American and World Wars One and Two. They are found in high places in our political, professional and social life.
The Christian spirit is ever formost in all social activities, which are many and varied, bringing men together in promoting the Fatherhood of God and the brotherhood of man.
With a century of unsullied honor and outstanding achievements to its back, Independence Lodge No. 76, can and will continue to go forward.
With a membership of over six-hundred fifty all working in peace and harmony there is no reason for it not to continue the real work of the Masonic fraternity, that of building men. If it does not make better men it has failed.
"For the door of the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle cham- ber."
